Bought a LHT today...and then got screwed.
Bitter sweet day today.... I drove 3 hours each way to meet someone from craigslist who had the perfect LHT for me. Also, during those 6 hours paid about $30 in tolls (stupid south Florida).... anyways, I get home and hop on and it doesn't seem right... Yep, the ad said 56cm and it is (pretty sure) a 62cm! I know, I know I should have known better and checked out the bike more carefully, but I was just so excited and disassembled it and threw it in the trunk. Anyways, I called the dude and he said "sorry, but I already spent the money" meaning "no, I'm a jerk!" So now I'm screwed... I put it up on the marketplace, but either way, no long ride for me tomorrow....ahhh.....
Thanks for letting me vent... Anyone have a purchasing bike story so much worse I can feel better about myself? |
Dang! That sucks!

Sorry dude. That is bad from every angle. The bright spot is that it should be an easy resell and hopefully you won't lose much if any money. Chalk the cost/inconvience/disappointment up to the price of an education, and move on.

You really need to figure out what size it is. Go to Surly's website and check out the geometry and compare it to yours. I'm pretty sure you will have a much better time selling it that way. YMMV

A few weeks ago, I found a CL listing for a LHT frameset and front/rear Nice racks for $600 total. I asked if the seller would part with everything for $500. I'd pay cash too. He replies and says okay. I call and leave a voicemail to arrange a time for me to pick it up. Later that day after not hearing from him, I send a follow-up e-mail requesting a time to drive over and pick it up.
He replies to that e-mail in the signature style of a mobile phone message: short, uncapitalized sentences. u want the bike and the racks for $500? I reply, "Yes." i can do $550 thats the lowest i can go cause its all brand new never used Maybe he mistook my persistence for desperation and thought he could needle me for a few extra bucks. Either way, this totally hacked me off. Just a lousy way to make a sale. So, I replied, "No thanks," and that was that. So, I decided to buy one new from the LBS, and I brought it home yesterday. It's such a great bike stock. Went out for a ride today with my wife, and we had a great time. All's well that ends well. |
Don't even get me started. :twitchy:
i have to sell my baby,a surly long haul trucker touring bike, mechanically perfect.everything works.just needs new tires.it is rideable. it comes with fenders, pump,a frame mount bag, under seat bag, and a set of panners.make me a offer over 500.00. the bike out the door is1200.00 without the extras.please email me,thanks [Hello, can you tell me what size your LHT is?] its 8 yr old,,and its a 48 cm frame green in color,,and rack and bags on back,,,the frame alone is worth the price [Thanks Jon….too bad I’m too tall or I’d buy it!] im 6'2" and i ride it just fine jon |
fortunately, this is a cheap lesson learned. if you didn't overpay for it you should be able to get most, if not all, of your money back.
"already spent the money" means "sucker!" fyi. |
To those who said "lesson learned" you're absolutely right and I keep trying to convince myself that same thing. Just got a little bit easier as it is a new day and I slept some of the disappointment off.
@kayakdiver- I did do some measurements and with them am pretty sure it's a 62, but the measurements are so close to each other (within a 1/2" or so) it's hard to tell. I am going to get talk to surly on Monday and see if they can clear it up using a serial number. (but I don't want to call it a 62cm and screw the next guy because my measurements were off and it's a 60cm) |
