Impressions from a newbie
Hey all,
I've been reading posts for a while and recently got enough time to go for and overnighter. I decided to do it up right and mix in a bit of everything. I started on pavement and switched to dirt road to jeep road and even some real singletrack. For any western Carolinians, I started in Haywood Co and camped at Buckhorn Gap Shelter (Pisgah NF). I am quite pleased in what I found...
-My tires were Avocet Cross 26x1.25. They did everything great. Smooth and pavement and I was very impressed with the performance on singletrack, as they stuck to everything from mud bogs to rocks.
-I was pleased that the suspension fork did not bob on the road. Maybe this was because all the weight was on the rear wheel. If you want to turn a mt bike into a touring bike, then by all means switch it out, but if you are going to use it until you can buy a touring bike, then it won't hurt that much.
-Although I packed very lightweight, forgetting a spoon was a complete accident and made dinner more of an adventure than it should have been.
-I will never add more spice to a couscous concoction that I realy don't know its current contents.
-A good book is a good idea to pack.
-This if fun and I need to find more time to do more of it (especialy the offroad part).
Thanks for all the advice from this forum,
scott

Gosh, around 2700 miles on the back rodes bike, I do alot more hard surface touring then off road, believe it or not, I have not had to remove the tires in 8 years.....NO FLATS. I'll hace to figure out how to send you some pics, haven't done that yet on here.
