Fenders and My Yakima Bike Rack

I just (1 month ago) purchased a new to me Olive Green Surly LHT with 700c wheels and stock tires. I have been lurking and reading a good bit (thanks) and have started to complete some of the upgrades to the bike. I purchase a Surly Nice Rack for the rear and a Topeak Pump !!

After mounting the pump I found that using the three frame mount water bottle holders the bottom one gets really dirty on the local Rail trail... So I want to get fenders

Problem is how am I going to clamp to the front tire with my Yakima High Roller (I think) rack with the fender in place?

I have attached a picture of a very similar rack.

Can the fender be a quick removable type or am I looking for a different rack...

Thanks so much for your help...

Mike

Fenders and front racks do not play well with roof top car racks. I have the same problem!

My only advice is to ride your bike everywhere. That eliminates the car rack dilemma.

What size tires? My Planet Bike Hardcore Hybrid Fenders have almost 14" of clearance from the ground. I have attached a VERY FLEXIBLE piece of rubber sheeting (rubber roofing) onto the PB mudguard. Interior dimension of the fenders is about 43mm. Works really well on 35s and 40s.

I have a front low rider and very long metal fenders on my Surly. I recently purchased a Thule Criterium carrier as a work around to this issue. The other carriers I have are fork mount. I have only taken several trips with the bike on the Criterium, but is has been fantastic and did a great job at highway speeds. The design is different than that of the Yakima system and doesn't involve the front wheel/tire at all. Even with highway speeds the front wheel had very limited movement in the carrier. The clamp hasn't left the slightest mark on the frame after several trips. Yes, this would mean a purchase of $130 for a new carrier, but it does work very well for bikes with fenders or low riders. I have mine attached to Yakima bars and the fit is great.

I have Yakima fork mount racks. We use the SKS fenders that allow the fender stays to clip out of the nylon mount on the front fork eyelet. I just unclip them and push the fender to the side and monunt the bikes on the rack. Doesn't look real clean, but it works.

Thanks for the replies everyone...

Fast_Track I had looked at those racks but got the Yakima cheap on Craiglist and couldn't pass it up... works great for the current bike without fenders...

Doug, I'll have to look into this I think I've seen that its the bit that allows the fender to break away if something gets caught up in it right?

and Riseabove I wish I could just ride everywhere but our weekly ride group meets 30 miles south of me... on the rails to trail... Love the group and the fact that they have a slower bunch for the wife and a few who can kick it up a bit on the trail and I ride with them...

Thanks Again

Mike
