Where to stay with (non-biking) wife to see Fall Colors?
 

It looks like I will have a chance to ride to/through the New England fall colors this year.

I'm just starting to plan this trip and after a month or so of bike touring, my plan is to meet my wife somewhere (she will fly in), spend a few days seeing the fall colors (either driving, taking a tour, or getting bikes for rides in the countryside), then fly home.

I will be starting in Lambertville, NJ September 1 and riding around until about October 1 (no plan yet). My destination will be the place my wife and I will be staying. I'd prefer a smaller town where my wife can drive to after flying in.

Any suggestions on places to check out?

I lived there for three years.....get reservations early, the "leaf peepers" hitting the town fill up the hotels fast. :)

Fall colors are hard to gauge each year, but you should be able to find some nice riding for the times you reserved. Burlington/the Lake Champlain valley generally have a later color change then the mountains down the spine of the state or the Northeast Kingdom. I would check out www.localmotion.org and www.lakechamplainbikeways.org for information on routes around Burlington and the Lake Champlain basin. A really nice ride that is very easy would be to ride the Burlington Bike Path north, then over the bike bridge to Colchester, and then the Colchester bike path out onto the narrow causeway that loops into the middle of the lake. Great views of both VT and the Adirondacks of NY. The ferry won't be operating at the causeway cut, so you'll have to turn around and head back, but a great ride.
