Kona changed the design on sutra 2010.new dropouts and rack mount now look pretty beefy/thick(measured 7mm thick with paint) and use bigger bolts, so i can't imagine this new design to break so easily. racks are not installed currently..

Good point. Also, moving the disc mount to the chainstay gets rid of the rack mount issues so you no longer need spacers or disc specific rack that could add leverage to the eyelet.

Yeah. all in the design. as you can see my sutra finally arrived(coincidentally on my birthday 25.06 ) been waiting for it for more than 3 months, prolly only sutra in my country.im still toying with it so i didn't make any pictures and im still waiting for a matching shorter stem cos stock one(115mm) on 58 frame is to long, but i already knew that. and thx for helpful info about the bike, made things easier when i ordered

I bet that eliminates a big part of the problem.

Wow, that is a long wait, indeed! Congratulations and happy birthday! Perhaps they knew when your birthday was and wanted you to get the bike on your birthday, LOL?

Any longer rides yet?

Bummer to hear about these breaking issues. This was a well-known issue with the 2005-2009 Sutras though. Like others have said, the 2010 design is much better. I've had by 2010 model for almost a year of hauling 30 to 50lb loads on the rear rack and haven't had a single problem.

100lbs of gear is pretty insane, regardless of what bike you have. If you don't break your braze-ons or dropouts, you'll break your rack, spokes, or wheels soon enough...

indyfabz - can't believe you toured carrying a medium format SLR and three lenses. a regular 35mm slr wasn't enough? lol... i think i could easily get by with a 35mm/full frame sensor and a few primes. probably wouldn't need more than a 24mm and a 105mm macro.

its the 5 AA winder that I love....jeepers. Im a photo guy so you have inspired me, Im going to take my Graphic next time (just kidding)

all jokes aside, when I toured, I struggled initially thinking of what camera stuff to take, and ended up taking a pt and shoot with B+W (my personal work was all in b+w back then) mostly cuz of the weight, which brings me to this posters claim of 40kg....even if exaggerted, yowser, lots of stuff.

I pared down and pared down on my tours, made a real diff., and believe me, going up stuff like the Col de Tourmalet (sp?) I was glad I pared down....

if you are still touring Sutra guy, hope the repair went well and that your trip has been good.
