Route suggestions for northwest India?

I've had a sudden thought of joining a friend of mine who will soon be cycletouring in northwest India. He hasn't thought about a route or even really a region yet, but will be heading there from Nepal in a month or two, and plans to stay in that region for a couple of months.

Has anyone got any thoughts about good cycling in the area? Let's say it's September, and I have 12 days of riding. I'm ready to up the hardcoreness a bit in terms of rough roads, rough sleeping etc, though my fitness will not be exceptional, so something like 80-100km per day if relatively flat is enough, and more like 40 if very hilly. I'm relatively experienced, with probably something like 20 multi-day cycle tours (almost all 3-4 days) under my belt, and recently returned from 8 days of tandeming in the southwest of France. My friend is ridiculously hardcore - recently did 1800km solo in China.

I'm guessing it doesn't make sense to camp, since accommodation will be cheap.

Anyway, it's obvious I've only just started thinking about this, but I welcome any thoughts or suggestions anyway :) If there are any "must do" sights or rides or climbs in the area, tell me! I'd be up for one or two massive climbs, but would prefer not to spend the whole time in mountainous terrain - variety is better. I'm not against using the train to extend our range.

There is some excellent cycling in the Himalayas in September – see the signature link in the previous post. We really enjoyed our tour of Rajasthan see Cycling in India but we were there in December / January. I don’t know how bad the monsoon / heat can be in Rajasthan in September. The bike brats have a well written blog on cycling in India, as does the Cycling around the world website - Northern India.

Happy trails,
Grace
