Bicycling Magazine and Surly - No Loved Lost?

Bicycling Magazine and Surly - No Loved Lost?
Stopped by the library today and noticed the 2010 buyers guide. Since I'm close to buying my first touring bike I thought it would be a good read.
Browsed the magazine and was a bit shocked when I got to the touring section. The LHT wasn't even mentioned.
The bikes that got mentioned were:
Novara Safari
Fuji Touring
Moots Mootour
Rivendell Betty Foy
I thought maybe they had more on their website. So I did a little search there and no LHT reviewed under touring bikes. In fact, the only Surly I could find mentioned was the Pugsley.

So what's up with that? Why no love for Surly from the folks over at Bicycle.com?

LHT is not a bad bike, but it's too pricey with a MSRP of $1150. The frame is too soft for me when fully loaded. Quality of seat, wheels, brakes, and paint are just so so.

Yeah, I wouldn't lose any sleep over it. (Heck I wouldn't lose much sleep over a choice of touring bikes either, they're all nearly identical. ) Touring isn't exactly that magazine's forté, they're much more for the wanna-be-fast types.

Ya that is a pretty much hodge-podge list of bicycles there. I don't think the Betty is even a tourer. Anyone here ride a Moots?!? Lol!

the moots just looks like a plain 'ol road bike with an extra water-bottle mount, at least to me. then again i'm not an expert on such things.

Yes, the Mootour is a touring bike, though more of a sport tourer if you want to be fussy.
Ti frame, can take wide tires, long chainstays, can take S&S couplers. AFAIK you spec the components, so there's no problem putting low gears on it.

the buyers guides are always a sampling of what's on the market. they try to hit multiple price points too, thus everything from novara to rivendell.

I go to Barnes and Noble, buy a coffee, and then sit and skim through Bicycling, because it has some good stuff in there, but it surely isn't worth the price to actually buy it.

I have buddy who used to write for a cycling related magazine or two, he quit because he got tired of the advertisers dictating what he wrote, he now owns the biggest triathlon website on the web, when he reviews something now I listen, cause I know he doesn't bow to the advertising dollar on reviews. Anything else written in print media is pretty much an ad for the product that paid the bills that month.

free subscription to bicycling comes with becoming a member of league of american bicyclist. i don't have to buy it at all! and its always worth a quick peek, tonight i was reading the issue that came today, the editor was ripping floyds lack of integrity but in a nice way. plus the editor is kind of hot!
i might be biased as i've worked for better than a decade in the gear and outdoor and bicycling industries, and think there's nothing wrong whatsover with the bicycling magazine approach.
it is duplicated in most every sporting and hobby enthusiast magazine i have seen, be it surfing, jogging, knitting, model train buff, climbing, hunting, sea kayaking or whatever.
i might be biased as i've worked for better than a decade in the gear and outdoor and bicycling industries, and think there's nothing wrong whatsover with the bicycling magazine approach.

Having the crew at Bicycling magazine review touring bikes is like having the guys at Car and Driver review a Lincoln Towncar. They have absolutely no cred in a review of a product they not only know nothing about, but for the most part, distain.
Not that that rag has any cred anyway. It's all about the advertising.
Also left out of the review were Co-motion, Gunnar, Waterford, and most notably absent, Trek. How do leave the world's best selling touring bike out of a touring bike review? Well, if you're a roadie, pretty easy.

What Bek said... Companies who get their bikes featured in those kinds of articles in those kinds of magazines pay up front for that sort of product placement. That's why I, for one, don't consult those sorts of sources when I go shopping for anything.
