First tour

Just did my first short tour. Last Monday to thurs, 3 night camp, 4 days travel. Left from my house and rode to Rowley, Ma and camped. Then on to Salisbury res. and paid my only fee for the week, $22. Salisbury to Lowell Dracut Tyngsborough State Forest was the Wed. travel. Thursday I traveled to Pepperell to get on the Nashua River rail trail. Followed to the end in Ayer Ma and then through Concord and home.
196 miles for 4 days. No flats and no rain, can't complain about a little headwind by the ocean. Used the Burley runabout with 2 racks and 4 bags. It's a touring/steel commuter with disk brakes and 28/38/48 up front with a 32 -12 out back. 1.75 conti-contact? tires worked well. It has a flat swept back bar with bar ends, several comfortable positions. Not a light bike by any means. With the racks and bags empty it weighs in at around 35 lbs. I carried probably 30 lbs of gear, food and water. No shimmy, no issues.

It was a very enjoyable ride. Usually my riding is off road or commuting. It was a nice to be able to look at the map, say lets go here and spend the day at my own pace, with no time or pace constraints, only a general idea.

Thanks for posting. You were guerrilla camping at all these places except Salisbury Beach? I'm looking for good destinations for eastern MA bike touring, but I'm not sure I'm comfortable camping in urbanized places like Lowell-Dracut-Tyngsborough SF. The MA state parks would be ideal, but they're sort of expensive and apparently charge a two-night minimum stay, which is not usually what I'd want. Anyone know of any good places to camp inexpensively, safely, and preferably legally in eastern MA? Thanks!

The camping in Rowley was through Essex County Greenbelt by permission. It is a carry in/carry out, no facilities. Not recommended, has LOTS of greenheads and horseflies, on a salt marsh, with mosquitoes too.
