Maximum Fender Size?

I just posted a thread on the "general" forum, and I'm not entirely sure that was the best place to ask this question, so I'm hoping this is a better spot, but please feel free to let me know if there is a more appropriate location to pose this Q.

I'm in the process of obtaining a Rivendell Sam Hillborne frame. My husband and I will be building the bicycle together (which I'm pretty excited about!), and while I anxiously wait for the frame to arrive, we've been purchasing various components and parts for the bicycle. I'm wondering if anyone out there knows what the maximum size is for fenders on this particular model? I'd hate to purchase something and then have them not fit.

Additionally, if anyone knows what the minimum difference in size for tires and fenders is, this would be very helpful as well. For example, could one have a 40mm tire and a 41mm fender, or is there more clearance needed?

Thanks in advance for assistance with this.

Don't own any Riv Frames.. but I'd say, as a mudguards on most bikes user,
Go for a wider one, though water will spray mostly off the center of the tire,
50 is only 5mm wider on either side of a 40mm tire.

I have a Sam myself, and put 50s on it from VeloOrange. I have good clearance for 35 tires.
