I know bike tours are generally rather flexible in terms of schedule, but do you have an idea of when you might reach the San Francisco area? We're planning on heading south from here on Oct. 1st. I'll keep an eye out for Myrtle if you might be in the area around that time.

I've ridden the Oregon coast three times and my first time I started from Astoria the third week in September. It was a great time to ride. With the summer tourist season over we found that restaurants and campgrounds were uncrowded but still open. Weather was great that year - no rain and little headwind in the 10 days to San Francisco. Have a great ride.

Hey Kip - good to know you had such wonderful weather. I've been a little worried about starting out so late. Weetbix - thanks for the support and following along all this time. Prathmann - getting to SF by Oct 1st would be an incredible feat for me but let's stay in touch - it would be fun to meet up.

The pacific coast ride really is fabulous and with all the great camping it is also very inexpensive. Last time I did this, 2007, was before labor day and I think I'll be enjoying quieter roads and campgrounds. What I loved was meeting up with all the cyclists at the hiker/biker sites going over the days adventures.

Hey Kayakdiver - looks like you are having a great ride. In all the touring I've done the Avenue of the Giants is still a highlight. I can't wait to ride it again. Hopefully I'll get the good weather you are having.

Hey John - I laughed out loud with your post thinking back to those ferocious raccoons at Samuel Taylor. Too funny! They hauled off one of my panniers and even got into your bear proofed bag.

Yes. That is true.

When Sylvia and I met up at SP Taylor we were the only ones in the hiker biker site in late September I think. The racoons had no one else to bother. They just focused on us the whole night.
