Buenos Aires to Ushuaia route help

Does anyone know a good route from Buenos Aires down to Ushuaia?

I'm kicking of my South America tour in November, and that is the first leg of the journey. After that I'll be making my way back up, eventually ending in Columbia. I have seen a lot of journals with routes heading to Ushuaia, but they are usually more on the western side. I'd like to save that for when I start heading north.

Looks like you could take Ruta 3 all the way from BA to Ushuaia. Have you looked at Jeff Kruys' journal? He rode from BA to Trelew on Ruta 3 before turning off to go towards Chile.

Hey, yeah, read my description of the stretch from Puerto Madryn to Trelew here. I hated Ruta 3: no shoulders, major truck route, no scenery, no trees, strong westerly wind, small towns 100-200km apart. Note the first three photos on that page, and extrapolate that to imagine the scenery for something like 2000km from Bahia Blanca to Tolhuin where it finally becomes interesting again. It can be done of course, and if you think you might like that, go right ahead. Generally, the scenery in Patagonia is only interesting on the Chile side, and in Argentina but only near the Chile border. Good luck to you and let us know where your blog will be.

Welcome to BikeForums! Congrats on finishing the trip; you are like a modern day Magellan :)

I am using your blog to plan my own little tour.

Cool, thanks! Lots of free time to contribute here now! Where'll you be heading?

Hey Jeff, congrats on finishing your epic trip! I was just showing your journal to a co-worker yesterday.

Thanks for the insight on the route. I'm on the fence about whether to ride that section or not. I was thinking of just flying straight to Ushuaia, and your review of the route from BA is definitely pushing me in that direction.

The website is going to be www.awesomebiketour.com. I haven't put anything up yet, I'll probably do my first post this weekend.

You can see penguins in Puerto Madryn - very cool. Ushuaia is a nice little town. You can take a boat tour from there to see the sea lions and they're really fun.

I haven't biked (we were there on a cruise) but I thought I'd add my 2 cents on the places I'd been.

I was thinking of the plain vanilla west coast route down to Ushuaia. Some what similar to the route these folks took.

Sorry pasopia, didn't mean to hijack your thread. Good luck on the tour!

No worries, hijack away! What do you mean by the "plain vanilla" route?

By that I mean the most popular route. It is no riding the spine of the Americas.
