Well touring with a single speed/fixed gear is no joke. I'll be heading up to SF from LA in about two weeks, and if you plan on taking PCH, which I highly recommend, there are some serious elevation changes. Granted going south is a LOT easier, but check out www.mapmyride.com and look at what elevation changes you're going to be dealing with. I'd definitely recommend a flip flop hub with the biggest cog you can find on one side for those steep, persistent inclines.

Give us some details, is this gonna be a 'credit card' trip or are you planning on bringing all your own cooking utensils/tent/sleeping?

Search the forums using google, every question you have has probably been answered. I know there is quite a few threads on touring with a single speed.
