Classic Touring Machines

Having started cycling in ol' bean town Boston, old tourers have a strange allure. More than nostalgia it's about the gentility of a bygone era. The nice clothes help too - love those old tweed touring clothes. Classy!

Browsing the web looking for porteur rack pictures and setups a couple of nice sites popped up. And wouldn't you know, one of them is in Boston - http://bostonretrowheelmen.blogspot.com/ . Some things never change. Anyway, here's a couple of links to share. Enjoy.

Love to see your "Light Touring" rigs... Like doing Randonneuring without the rush :)

Here is what I use for most of my touring at the moment. It was originally sold as a city bike back in the late 1980's. It runs a fairly narrow 35 tire and doesn't really have a loaded touring geometry. But does well with up to 50# on board.

It is a 1989 Giant Excursion. I also have a mid 70's Dawes Galaxy frameset that I am going to build up as a Clubman

Le plus ca change, le plus c'est la meme chose..the more things change, the more they stay the same. Check out this little write up about Velocio, 2nd half of the 19th century, touring around France.
