Yup, can still steer just fine. Rides really well...
I had the key ring / ID badge one. Worked OK. This is the same concept from Showers Pass. Longer, and smoother. Made for this application.

Bicycle Repair Man !!!
Heading out this weekend for a few days... has been quite some time since this old mule has hit the road and it has been quite some time since the Cascade has done anything save for lighter day trips.
I built new CR18 wheels on Arvon hubs and refitted my drivetrain with an LX compact triple... not that I am going to need those low gears on the prairies.

My military green bag and bivy are in the 12litre compression sack... am also packing my one man tent and thermarest to keep the bugs off me and my luxury items are my Fiskar axe (that has 300 feet of paracord whip wrapped around the handle) and my larger but rather light stainless rocket stove.
This will be a good road / gear test as I plan to do more touring this fall when the shop slows down.

222 km on the weekend and managed to average 16kmh over the first 102 km leg... cut my weight in half for the ride back as a friend shuttled the camping gear back in his car so even though we had put in a hard day before the ride home was really quite fast considering we were still riding bikes that were hitting the curb at 20kg with our light gear.
My best speed on the way out was on the gravel and potholed back roads... this bike lives for this.
We hit part of the trans Canada trail on the way back which is a lovely unpaved trail system and with a lighter load we really cranked it up... we then stayed to the secondary highways which were almost carless... this is big sky country.

I've mentioned this before, but 16, 17kph has pretty much been an average speed for a majority of my trips over the years. Sure a little faster some days or a little slower others in mountains, but I still pretty much use it as a guesstomator for seat of pants reckoning of routes.
The weather looks like it was nice. You may recall I have a Caravan, the light tourer, bought I think in 91. Once in a while I figure I should sell it, but never do...

I love my Cascade so much I bought another matching frame / fork and over the winter will be transforming that by adding a few braze on mounts and an integrated rack to the rear and will then tear down my beloved so she can get a little love with the torch before she gets a new paint job.
The bike does everything it needs to do really well...

My Dawes Super Galaxy '95 while touring Scotland, June '14


The bike was sold at the end of the trip - I don't have much use for this bike, and our living space is limited. Not to worry: I'll still be touring, just not on this bike.
(My new do-it-all bike is a Niner EMD, with rigid carbon fork and two sets of wheels)

Soooo, 10 mph is an average number for a grossed out rig? I'm curious because I had a hard fought 63 miles on my unloaded dual sport today and I can't imagine how I might have felt toting an extra 100 pounds of garb.

First camping trip with my new 1982 Schwinn Voyageur at Rock Cut State Park, IL. My first steel frame bike since college, and I really like the ride.

Very difficult to say whether that 10mph is realistic. Here in Coastal North Carolina, everything is really flat, & the roads are fairly smooth so you can get by with 32mm tires, so even if you are heavily loaded you might do 12 or 15mph. However, when the roads are more hilly and/or bumpy, going fast gets tougher.

My fixed gear tour across the country. DC to LA in 38 Days. 3,080 miles. My ratio was 46 x 18, it was totally solo and self contained. This bike is a online order, i believe you can pick one up for $150, but of course I've upgraded everything since. The frame is still good though, gotta love steel. I am a messenger in DC so this bike is always moving. I plan to do another tour but more remote this time. Anything is possible!
