Tent maker
 

Hi all,
We have a Jack Wolfskin Worlds End tent that we've been using for several years now and its time for another.
Now we love this tent and would like to get a new one just like it. Jack Wolfskin has started production of the worlds end tent again after a couple of years stopage but the new ones are a kg heavyer than the older model.
There isn't another in the market thats close to this for space vs weight vs price (+/-300euros) vs ventilation vs ease of use.
We think if we were to dish out 900+euros for a Hilleberg or Helsport tent we could spend the money and get something were happy with.
So this summer while on tour we ran into this other cyclist (from Ireland) in France who said there is this tent maker in Scotland that takes old(er) tents, removes the panels and uses them as a template for a new tent using the materials of your choice.
I have tryed google but no luck, has anyone here heard of this tent maker?
Just like to know what would the actual cost be and if it was worth the trouble.

They are the authorised repairer for Hilleberg in the UK.

Stevenson Warmlight is another tent maker, NH USA , quite light and the 3 person is roomy, 12 feet long..
no vestibule so interior is full length , they sew a shorter version too for climbers with small ledges for camp sites.
a custom sewn collection of parts and colors , they use a pre curved 7075T6 pole that is quite thin wall
so light but strong, and sil light fabric which is impregnated rather than coated , for waterproofness

I have a used one year and stored Stevenson, double wall with side windows for ventilation.. Green.
will shed myself of it for at most half of my cost..

I would also look into the deal on the weight of the tent you like. There isn't that much scope for wild changes in the weight of tents. If there is a significant increase in the weight it could be something as simple as the weight is being honestly stated in current production or in a catalog you are looking at. Or is being weighed with poles/accessories in one place and not in another. I could also see you go through a whole custom project with someone and end up with an overweight tent. You only have to make some slightly different specification, and you will end up with more weight. It isn't like canoes, or something, where you can make them out of aluminum or leaded paint, on one extreme and corcell and carbon on the other, and play with weight in large amounts. To add a KG to a tent of the same design, it's pretty much attributable somehow to zipper weight, fabric weight, pole weight, etc...

Also, there is a high probability that if you buy some other tent on weight in preference to yours, you will find it is actually a pound or two heavier. Never become a slave to tent weights unless you have actually weighed them on a reliable scale yourself. Actually same goes for bikes. But at least with bikes the sizes are some excuse.

I really like the way you look at the problem it does give us food for thought. We think that a complete custom job will also be very expensive.
The idea was that the (new) design would have a few changes like removing the see through windows and the skylight over the vestilube with its huge cover which we never use.
But at the price of around 300euros we think it would be cheaper to buy the new tent and have someone remove them. It would still be cheaper than dishing out for a complete rebuild.

Perhaps they can tell you why the new version is a kilogram heavier than your version.
