This is why I like having a Trek 520 as my touring bike, an un-painted titanium bike as my road bike, and a pickup truck as my vehicle. I used to have a fancy sports car, and I felt like it owned me. I'd rather just use my stuff, and if it looks used, so be it.
Next year I'm going to get a carbon road bike, and I'm already weirded out about how I'm going to feel about the first scratch. Life is too short! |
get fit loose the flab.
only tour when the sun shines. don't tour with a prick. make sure you can read a map properly. buy the best. then when all that is sorted ,burn the computer and go and do it. |
A 40 or 50 mile day that takes all day to do is never bad. I occasionally read some of my old tour journals and if the first thing I wrote was something like "What a great day" there is 90% chance that it was a short day with lots of stops, rain or shine, wind or hills.

It's quite easy to get caught up doing the office chair touring thing, daydreaming all the time, reading journals and such, but in the end you need to just get out there and do it. You can make yourself pretty miserable daydreaming all day about touring while at work. And if you're not working then you should be out touring anyway! |

I have to confess that I absolutely love coming to this forum. In a short space of time, I've laughed, I've learned and I've been amazed at some of the stories. So, this may have been covered before, but here's my question: if you had one golden rule to pass on to a first time tour taker, what would it be? Or, what's the absolutely best tip you like to pass on?
Cheri Print up some mailing labels before you leave on tour so that when you ignore the first piece of advice you'll be able to mail home the stuff you don't need more easily. Have two sets of labels since you'll probably realize some of the stuff you absolutely couldn't live without when doing the first purge is dead weight during your second purge. |
My best piece of advice, gleened (unfortunately) from personal experience: Don't squat in poison oak.

Have fun!

Put your dog repellent on one side of your handlebar bag.
Always put it on that side. Put your asthma inhaler on the other side of your handlebar bag. Always put it on that side. I have learned this lesson. |
