Photo Gallery & Travelogue Portal
Is there a webiste out there that allows anyone to submit photos, and lump them together in a huge database so that other users can search the website for a specific location at a specific season? This may be helpful for someone who wants to plan out a trip on a bike (or on a car ). Say, "I want to get into Canada from PN. Should I go through Detroit or Niagara Falls?" So he goes to this website, look for pictures of both places, and make a decision on the route.
Or it could be simply a place for everyone to enjoy pictures upon pictures.
And then there could be a travelogue database for cyclists (or drivers ) that seamlessly binds to the photo gallery submitted by the traveller, or all photos from the location mentioned in that particular portion of the travelogue. I'm aware of Yahoo! and pbase kind of photo galleries but they are not, uhm, cross-referencable? Then there are travelogues hosting but again no cross-reference.
Is there such a site? If not, is it useful? If yes, is it "Oh my ******* ******** why didn't anyone think of that!?!?" kind of useful? If yes, then maybe I can make it a Christmas break + summer 2005 project (you can get that kind of time if you don't watch TV). You can see my photo gallery down in my sig, which is a database of 1,700+ photos yet surprisingly, the photos take up only 93MB, which makes a pretty attractive point in this proposal.
Designing and building has always been something that enthuse me a lot but at the same time they prevent me from thinking clearly. I have done lots of projects in the past (irqnine and my wooden camera mount) but I have come to think that while they are useful to me, they are not useful for many. I have millions of ideas shooting out from this concept but I think it's best to get the questions above answered first.

Sound like a great idea, a resource center for people who like to tourabout, Plenty on this forum as you can see. A search engine for phrases, routes, towns etc, where you could check out if any one has toured that way get advice, hints, recomendations for bedding down, routes to avoid etc.
I recently did a tour in Italy and outside a town called Grosetto, I was heading for cittavecchia then Rome, I continued up to the S1 and,,, its now been extended to a motorway, not shown on the recently published map. The detour I had to do was a straight 15 hr ride with 2 small breaks in between to get back on course. It would have been nice to post this so others could have perhaps avoided the same scenario. Saying that whilst I was planning the detour to get back on track to Rome I came across 2 riders who had passed me a couple of hours ago. They too had to now figure a detour. We put our heads together and worked out a lovely route through Tuscany, it was nice to have company and a general bike chi chat along the way. They were heading for Sicily and had come from Bolzano, the Italy/Austria region.
Good luck will keep an eye on this thread.

I have always fancied having a PDA in my trip, with a software to record down my travel infos of the day, because that is when you remember most of a trip. Then when you come to a wired cafe, either plug your PDA into the network or upload through a computer and tada, all stats updated. That would be cool.
