1986 Miyata Six Ten!

Don't know if this would be the right place for this topic, figured it might belong in vintage bikes, but I am more interested in touring and responses from the touring community. Thanks to everyone here on BF for all the knowledge that has been imparted and helped me make this purchase.

I had been scouring craigslist for an older touring bike for the last few months. Checking it everyday, multiple times a day. I wanted an older 80's steel touring bike - Miyata 610, 1000, Trek 520,620,720 something of the sort. The search was consuming me, I'm sure some of you know how that is. Preferably I wanted it with bar end shifters and all the braze-ons for around $300. I know that may have been a tall order for $300, but that is all I had to work with. After countless hours on craigslist I finally saw a Miyata 610 that had all the braze-ons I wanted minus the bar end shifters and it also had 700c wheels for $295.

I called the guy up right away, it was about 9am he said it was ready to ride so I told him SOLD. Made my way about an hour and a half away to get the bike. Patience is a virtue.

So here are the pictures of my spoils:

Came with everything minus the brooks, toe clips and the white bottle cage. Those were all mine I added. Now I don't know if $300 was a steal for the bike, but it sure felt like one!

The paint is pristine, untouched pictures don't do it justice. I have been itching to ride it so bad, I have taken it on a few small rides, but I want to do a tune up make sure everything is in order before I take it on a longer one. Re-grease the hubs, clean the chain, true the wheels etc.

After some research on the internet I found out it is a 1986. One of the few years to get the triple butted Cr-Mo tubing and 700c wheels.

Just felt like sharing my find with the community and if anyone has owned a Miyata 610 before hopefully they can drop some knowledge about the bike because I would love to know more about it.

Once again, thank you to the whole BF community.

Fabulishous bike! I had an 89 1000 that of course lived up to it's rep. Please don't be stingy about posting on the C&V Forum, they would probably rattle on for days with accolades. But, if you want advice and opinions from folks that are dedicated to nothing but the 1000, 610, & Expedition; you might want to check-out this small forum.https://sports.groups.yahoo.com/group/MiyataSpecTour/

Nice looking Miyata! Almost looks like new in the pics. Good find; looks like it even has a half-step crankset.

Great score, congratulations!! I've been watching for a similarly equipped bike for a while, but they don't come up for sale often in this area

Almost any Miyata from the 1980s that is still in decent shape is a great find, and should ride beautifully for years to come. Congratulations on finding a keeper!

Hi Herb

I just viewed your 86 610. Beautiful bike and great score.

I just have one question for you. Are the hubs cassette sealed or loose bearings?

I guess I have two questions. Would you be interested in making a trade for a like new 60 cm, 88 Miyata 1000 with only about 5000 km on it? Red is not my favorite colour and I would actually prefer to trade for a like new Miyata 1000 but I am having a tough time finding one. If anyone has one, please email me.

Thanks
