I have a set of 20 year old Bruce Gordon made racks , on my veteran touring rig.

I got a small rack made that sits above the wheel..
it was made by M Steel in Newcastle upon Tyne in Northern England..
they made it in a day , then I got on a ferry to Norway.

Everybody has a right to their own opinion.... but Tubus racks are way, way better than anything Surly has ever come up with. Go check out the Tubus website. Tubus has real engineers who design great products. Surly, well I don't know, hired some marketing firm to name some cheap, heavy, junk rack after a women's breasts? Real classy.... *nice rack* Jeeze, do any of you clowns working at Surly have any daughters? Want some pimply faced 13 year old kid using the *nice rack* line on them?

I decided to go with black when I bought my panniers; they don't seem to stand out and say "steal me" the same way red or other colors do. I know visibility is important on the bike, but I'll leave that job to clothing, lights and reflective material. I wouldn't try to match your panniers to the bike in any case. The color isn't going to be exactly right, and who knows what other color bike you might own in the future.

I have SKS P45 fenders on my LHT. They're well made, but I never could get them to fit exactly right (even after trimming the fender stays). They could also benefit from some mudflaps, I ended up buying a set made for Planet Bike fenders which happen to fit well. I'm not unhappy with mine, but if I had to purchase them over I'd give more consideration to Planet Bike or other brands.

Enough people have chimed in about racks that I'm not going to bother, but I will say that I have a set of stainless steel Tubus racks on my bike and I'm very happy with them. Enjoy your LHT!

How do you know they weren't referring to a buck?

Oh man, oh man, great stuff guys/gals/etc!

Wasn't on yesterday, and haven't read everything that was posted since my last post, but looks like I have a lot to chew on. Thanks everyone!

Will repost any questions that come up.

And...I was finally able to file taxes yesterday, HR Block is estimating 2-3 weeks. Hopefully I will have the bike when I take a road trip in March to see my parents in Little Rock and drive over my proposed tour route for September.

Replying to Eric's from Surly post....

Thanks Eric!

I thought you guys might be the kind of company that would check out these posts. Thanks for adding your input.

Very cool.

I may have just had my decision made for me unless the Tubus guy comes on here...I really like the rugged look of the Surly racks anyway.
