new handelbars/ brakes
 

i broke my clavicle a couple of months ago and want to turn my touring bike (heavy duty almost mountain bike surly LHT) into a supersafe bike for commuting, off road touring and lugging my 2 yr old son around on a bike seat.

i currently have 3t morphe tourign handebars with old mafac levers, dura ace bar end shifters and avid shorty canti brakes. i find the brakes a pain to adjust and the levers possibly a little too light . while i have loved the handlebars so far, i want something more upright, more comfy, wider and possibly suitable for brake levers which will pull a bit better. I also want to be able to use the bar end shifters if possible (they are loooovely).

i would appreciate any recommendations on a good set of bars.

You mean flat riser bars? Something along the lines of Origin 8 bars? I think 625mm is a good length (I'm 5'8"). I wouldn't be fussy there but that's your choice. For putting bar end shifters on flat bars, you can use Paul Thumbies. I know AspireVelotech has some silver ones which are a little harder to find. But, if I remember correctly, eBikestop had some black ones much cheaper. My personal choice for brake levers is Shimano Deore but I haven't done a ton of research on V-brakes and levers. (If you're using brakes for a road bike, then the flat bar Shimano group has flat bar brake levers for the right cable pull.) I find comments or reviews on brakes kind of subjective so it's hard for me to tell which is really better. The only thing I've read that's NOT subjective is people like the Kool Stop Salmon brake pads (or the dual compound ones).

You will need a change of brake levers, to 22.2 tube type, and the Nitto
Steel , Chromoly albatross bars are Ideal for using with bar end shifters,
as the high strength steel is thin wall so the clamping mech fits inside ..

you can also convert the brakes to V type with these
as the V brake levers will fit.

Nitto Mustache bars are road bar OD, 23 ish and will take bar end shifters ,
you can use them upside down for some rise, .
you can use Albatross bars inverted for some drop.
