Buying my first touring bike!
Hi everybody!
I've been cycling for a year and a half and due to the fact that I absolutely love traveling, I decided to combine my hobbies and start touring (:
I read a lot about the different kinds of touring bicycles and methods and decided that I'll start expedition style touring with full equipment. Due to the fact that I live in israel, there isn't any serious brand that sells touring bikes around here so I should buy one abroad. I thought about thorn nomad, did anyone rode one of those or has a different suggestion?
I intend on doing a long tour and prefer paying more money now for a good bike than getting stuck in the middle of Asia with a broken frame (:
Thank you very much for the help!

you certainly wont go wrong with thorn excellent bikes, i ride the sherpa with full shimano xt m770 hubs/gears front and back tubus racks hand built wheels sun rhyno and of course the brooks b17 special saddle.
my friend bought a ultra dawes galaxy he loves it that has the 700c wheels mine is 559.
i suggest you ring sjs cycles (thorn) and have a chat with robin thorn or one of the staff they wont put you wrong and a great back up service.

Bikes: Specialized Tarmac Expert, 2002 TREK 520, Schwinn Mesa WINTER BIKE, Huffy Rock Creek 29er, 1970s-era Ross ten speed. All my bikes are highly modified(except the Tarmac) yet functional, and generally look beat to ****. .

Another vote for Thorn. Expensive, but top of the line.

I think I'll buy the nomad with s&s. Do you know if they sell any high quality racks (tubus) or panniers? Does anyone knows a good place to buy some cycling gear in the UK (maybe in London)?
Thanks again!
Thanks again!

In a few months, the Surly Long Haul Trucker Deluxe is coming out, which has the S&S couplers factory installed. Surly isn't the most expensive bike, but it is an excellent bike for the money. 1095 last year for the complete bike, 1195 for 2011. You should definitely ride a Trucker just to see how you like it. I spent 2300 on mine with the Surly racks and Ortlieb bags and some other odds and ends. The Deluxe will come with 26" wheels.
