2011 Surly's at REI?

I have about a $250 REI dividend coming my way next week and want to pick up a 2011 Cross Check. REI shows the 2010s but no 2011s. I asked my local REI and they said they have no idea if they'll carry the 2011s. The 2010 Surly CrossCheck appears and then disappears off their corporate website almost weekly.

Anybody know the answer to this?

Ask the REI store if they can do a custom order for it. I ordered a Surly frame as a special order from the local REI store in December 2009 before they started selling Surly bikes. My local store regularly orders parts from Quality Bike and Surly is part of that same company. Your store may be willing to do a custom order if REI will not stock them this year.

I bought my Cannondale CAAD9-5 from them that way. They carry Cannondale but not particularly the CAAD9-5 so they had to custom order it. The problem with that is you have to pay a $69 shipping charge - a charge you wouldn't have to pay if it's something off their standard ordering list. That $69 would eat a big chunk of my dividend up so I'd rather avoid paying it.

You will also have the 20% off coupon coming so it would still probably be worthwhile.

That's an interesting thought but I didn't think you could apply that towards bicycles. At least not non-REI (Novara) bikes. It would be awesome if you could!

This was my post, above.

It was mentioned above that someone else had to pay a shipping charge. The local REI store told me that they do not charge shipping from Quality Bike, instead they charge full retail price and they use the profit from buying at wholesale to cover the shipping cost. I suspect that different REI stores may have differing policies. Ask your local store and see what they say.

I did not try to use a 20 percent coupon, I expect it does not work. But, paying full price on a special order should be dividendable (if that is a word) and using an REI credit card gets you another 5 percent from the credit card company.

Accordion,
There is no quick answer. I was told as of March 17th, that REI was cancelling their touring bike, the Radonee, as well as offering the Surly LHT online. But after I wrote an email to the main office this morning, March 18th, I was told that due to member's requests, they would offer the Novara Randonee later this spring, but at a pumped up price of $1200. You could use the member coupon for it, but NOT the Surly. They still have not decided to offer the Surly LHT on line for the 2011 season. They feel it to directly competes with their product.

Thanks for the reply Lucky. I just ordered a 2011 Safari. The 20% off coupon code came out and I applied it along with a $200+ dividend from buying my CAAD9 last year along with other gear and my total out the door was $498! Quite a deal for a brand new steel touring bike that should last me for years! I plan to ride it to the beach a couple times a week (22 miles roundtrip) along with getting some groceries. I wanted a Surly CrossCheck but this was too good to pass up - the CrossCheck would have cost double this.

I wish the Safari was 700 in my size or the Randonne was available. I, too, have ~$200 dividend and 20% that would be perfect for the Randonee.

Hi, I am a REI member looking at the safari, how do I obtain the 20% coupon? The Randonne sounds like a great deal as well thanks Mike

Ok I did call will work on the safari, Now, a question, I am med build at 5'9" give or take a foot, lol so would I be looking at a large or med safari? Someone had mentioned I should get a large they seem to be on the small size. That person is 6'3" and got a x lg. Does any one have a safari that could second this advice. I plan on going in to the store but they do not have any available to try. I have researched this touring bike thing to the end, I think this is a good bike, new steel frame now and a good deal with the 20% off. So I am diving in. My big x country tour is next year2012 this will give me this summer to get the wrinkles out.. i also need to add some upgrades. thanks mike

Hi Mike -

I'm 6'1" and got the X-Large. I'm a pretty beefy dude though and have long legs. I tried the large at our local REI and it felt small to me. If it's any help my mountain bikes have all been 21" bikes and my CAAD9 road bike is a 58cm. Everybody is obviously different and if you can't test one out I'd tell you to go for the large so you get the 700C wheels. I think the small and medium both have 26 inch wheels - something that is advantageous if you are traveling to other countries but in my opinion a disadvantage if you are riding in the states.
