Dear Big Rider:

I am active in Couch Surfing and I am surprised you are having trouble with finding a place to sleep. Have you been verified? Some people will not invite those who are not verified or active in their local couch surfing chapter.

John

Yes I recently got verified on CS. On Warmshowers, we have had all positive feedback too, so kinda weird that no one responds. Maybe it is because we are just looking for a place to stay the night. Like someone else pointed out, CS is more about meeting people, and it is not that we don't want to meet people, we absolutely do, but I don't try to hide the point that we are looking for a place to stay just for one night. We have never had such bad luck contacting people. On our cross country tour last year people were very prompt at getting back to us.

I think it might be an issue of demographics. Although the people in the Keys are generally very friendly, there aren't a lot of back-packer, bike touring, traveler types down there, which I would guess makes up the majority of hosts on c.s. and w.s. The Keys is mostly made up of upper-middle class people. It is very expensive to live there, and most people live there to fish and dive. Moving down the social ladder, there is also a big population of transient/fisherman/drunk/sketchy/1 step away from homelessness kind of people, which might turn off the residents to hosting strangers. I would bet that most people in the Keys have never even heard of c.s. or w.s. But I could be wrong.

I would also bet that once you get there, you will probably get invited to stay with someone, couch, backyard, boat, whatever. Two people on loaded touring bikes draw a lot of attention, as I'm sure you know. And traveling with your girlfriend/wife, you don't
come across as threatening as say 2 men or you riding solo. When I rode cross country with my girlfriend, we got invited to stay with people at least a dozen times, and we took at least half of them up on it.

Most of the Keys accessible have parks in them. Bahia Honda has a great campsite, Deer Key, Long Key, Key West, and I know there was another one I stayed at but I forget which. You'll figure it out. It's the beach, you can just camp on the beach. ;)
