I have to an extent, but since I don't know exactly what route to take yet, I'm just looking at the average. I've been to Northern AZ and NM before though, and I remember going from warm and sunny to lots of snow in very short time so of course that's something I'll need to take into account...

Hi ... just looked at your blog---very nice. I posted a suggestion there for your consideration about your route through California. I think most of us here who have cycled California would put you on Hwy 1 as opposed to Hwy 101 from Monterey to San Luis Obispo. Hwy 101 is essentially an inland freeway and Hwy 1 is the beauty of the Big Sur coast. Also, my wife and I would be happy to provide you a bed, shower and laundry in San Luis Obispo.

Every day a winding road
chickonbike,
Pat is a really great guy and very generous. My friend and I stayed with him in 2007 on our tour of the PCH. And if it is the same house we stayed, the view from his living room is spectacular. You really would be missing out if you did not take him up on his offer.

Hi Spinnaker...nice to see you again.
We moved from that house about a year ago into San Luis Obispo. But we still own the house and plan to move back there in a year or two. For now, trying to save some taxes on the sale of the house we are in here in SLO. Hope all is well for you!

I was looking at your blog, and noticed some of your recent shopping acquisitions. If you do not mind, I would like to suggest you acquire a few items of Merino wool, such as are available from Ibex. Merino wool will travel well, and require only bit more care than the Pearl Izumi items that you have already listed.
Last summer, I toured for a few days with a lady who had packed two wool tops, leggings and a short wrap skirt amoung her clothing stock. One top, the skirt and leggings were black, as were her travel flats (shoes). This enabled her to have a dressy ensemble available for when she wanted an evening out while traveling. And face it, there will be occasions while on the road when you will feel like not looking like a cyclist.

One thing I found a few years ago as I rode further south in Cali was that the tap water became nearly undrinkable. This was solved by bottled water dispensing machines that provided a gallon of water for $.25. It may be more now, but it did require you provide your own container. It comes out too fast to just switch your water bottles. That is why I am now carrying a 4 liter or 6 liter MSR Dromedary bag.
