Iceland bikes final incarnation

So I packed everything into my bags and did a 50 mile training ride with the setup I intend to take to Iceland. This was mostly to test the SKS fenders, they work really well for something that's held on with high tech rubber bands.

Looks good. I don't want to ride a tourer without fenders in spite of the extra weight. I commute with my tourer and fenders do their job well. The boots and uniform stay clean.

I've used those fenders on a commuter road bike and they were next to useless in the rain. Better than nothing, but not by much. If you have clearance for full coverage fenders and expect any significant amount of rain I'd go to the trouble of fitting them.

SKS are good for a travel bike. mine fit in the box i pack the bike in, not sure if full fenders would be easy to pack in the bike box.

Nun travels with bike in bag, but i imagine fenders would still be a hassle to pack.

Looks good, nun. 35c tires are a nice choice for mixed roads on tour. you're going in high summer to take advantage of the long days?

Full fenders would fit in my bike bag, but not on the bike with 35c tyres. So the SKS fenders are a good compromise. I've found that they work quite well and keep my feet and back dry.

Yes I'm going in summer and will have 18 hrs of daylight. I loaded everything up yesterday and did 50 miles in 4 hours, but this early in the season I'm feeling it today. My big fear is still the Icelandic wind, but I figure early starts and slow and steady will get me between beds.

The problem with most fenders is that they are not long enough. The old Blumels had a nice long flap that protected your feet, bb, crank and chain. I make flaps for my fenders out of stair tread or plastic milk jugs; or you can just use doubled up duct tape. SKS has just introduced their Longboard fenders with flaps which slves this problem.
