What are your touring plans for this year?

At this stage I'm thinking about some time in France and Spain around September/October of this year. From Paris I might head out into the Loire Valley, then heading south along the Atlantic Coast, Bordeaux and the French Basque region, before seeking out some mountains in the Pyrenees, then heading on to Barcelona and possibly some time on Mallorca.

I will have four weeks to play with.

What are your plans?

valygrl 03-30-11 10:01 PM

I was looking for a thread like this... guess there wasn't one?

Chris L, your plan sounds fabulous.

I'm doing 3-4 weeks, starting mid-September - Sierra Cascades starting at the north end and getting however far we get possibly Tahoe or Yosemite, with someone I met here on bikeforums a couple of years ago.

I'm a real touring newbie here. I'm planning my first self-supported tour for this summer, going down the Pacific Coast to San Francisco (or further?), coming home by Amtrak.

I've been reading the touring forums like crazy, and I've gotten so much good advice from the folks here. I can't wait to get out there on my bike.

Sixty Fiver 03-30-11 10:30 PM

Only long trip we are looking at is a week in the Rockies (Jasper) which is just a little ways down the road from here... will do lots of weekend trips like I did last summer.

Being in the bike business means that summer is our busy season and taking a week off in August is a luxury.

I'm just aiming to get out the door for ANY tour just outside my usual cycle-loops. Even if it's just an over-nighter. It will be my first since I decided I wanted to do it 2 years ago. 1 failed tour last year.

After that, maybe plan another tour further north or south of where I live. Having immigrated to Sweden from the US, even just 40 miles from the town I live in has lots of interest. :)

We should be heading to Vancouver Island in August.

We ostensibly will be in Vancouver to visit Machka's parents, but the Island beckons for some touring.

This planned tour has taken on many incarnations, but the latest one is Jackson, Wyoming, to Sacramento, via Utah and Nevada. Mid June thru July, most likely. Really looking forward to it.

You didn't look back far enough. I'm sure there was one right around Jan 1.

+1

And also several hub-and-spoke tours around Victoria ... that's Victoria, Australia. :)

That reminds me that we have a five-day long weekend coming up in a few weeks. I'm still not sure what I'll be doing then, as some of the roads on my original plan are still closed after the flooding back in January. I might head down to Minyon Falls and just wing it from there.

Machka 03-31-11 06:41 AM

We're taking 6 days on that weekend, and we've booked into a place near Adelaide. I've never been to Adelaide, or anywhere west of Portland, so I'm looking forward to exploring that area.

antokelly 03-31-11 06:55 AM

hoping to get to Scotland to meet up with a few lads from the fellclub spend a week at the KM rally in dumfries.
but if that doesn't happen i'll do some where here in Ireland.

tarwheel 03-31-11 07:12 AM

I've already signed up for two supported tours:

- Cycle North Carolina, which is 3 days of loop rides out of Oriental, NC, from April 8-10 (next week)

http://cnc.ncsports.org/springCNCRide/

- Bike Virginia, which is 5-6 days of riding in the New River Valley of Western VA, from June 24-29

1. 3rd annual trip from our front door to a New Jersey state park campground on an island in the Delaware River. Leaving Good Friday, returning Easter day. Last year there were only a handful of people at the park. Tiw years ago, we had the place to ourselves Saturday night. Kind of spooky.

2. June 29th we leave for Missoula for 8 days of riding. Overnights in Darby, Wisdom, Grasshopper Campground near Elkhorn Hot Springs on the Pioneer Mountains Scenic Byway, Divide, Twin Bridges, Butte via Pipestone Pass, and Hamilton via the Skalkaho Highway, where we plan to stop and pan for saphires here:

Pretty much everything is arranged. It's the waiting that is killing me.

Cyclesafe 03-31-11 07:45 AM

Sierra Cascades, north to south, as soon as the passes open. I'm thinking of starting about July 1. Lots and lots of snow this year....

BigBlueToe 03-31-11 08:00 AM

Great Divide, north to south, for 3-4 weeks.

ezdoesit 03-31-11 08:20 AM

If my plans finally come to be I'll do my first tour of my home state of New Jersey from High Point to Cap May 238 miles in 6 days at 40 miles a day I want to smell the rose's.
If anyone wants to go with me let me know it would be nice to have company.
This is unsupported.:)

Staying closer to home and doing this loop starting in Cranbrook BC:

The David Thompson Hwy looks like it will be amazing. We will be doing the Great Divide between Banff and the US Border but couldn't show that on the map. This will be a good christening for the new Fargo.

irwin7638 03-31-11 08:43 AM

I have several weekend trips on the agenda. Also a weeklong tour of trails in W.Michigan with a group of college students trying their first tour, another trip by Amtrak and bike to Washington and Philly. I am also trying to decide between the Lake Michigan shoreline or the St. Laurence shoreline betwen Montreal and Quebec City in August.
That should keep me busy.

Touring plans for 2011:
Nothing too ambitious-

*Take delivery of and builld up LHT frame (hopefully the next few days)
*Do the inaugural C&O Canal overnighter I had planned for late last summer but had to cancel (late April)
*Hopefully a couple other overnighters/long weekends before summer ends and I start full time grad school plus work

mvanderk 03-31-11 10:02 AM

Blue Ridge PKWY............ late May.

zoltani 03-31-11 10:10 AM

For now...just some short tours.

All plans are very tentative:

- Hopefully lots of over-night weekend trips
- Vancouver Island
- Olympic Peninsula
- Somewhere in the cascades, maybe mountain loop highway if I can talk my wife into some gravel
- Orcas Island
- Whidbey Island/Deception Pass

If you had to choose Vancouver Island or a loop around the Olympic Peninsula which would you choose? I am thinking about 4-5 days only

bullwinkle 03-31-11 10:16 AM

Driving from her to Albany (NY). Riding a loop from there up to Montreal and Quebec City, and then back south along the Connecticut River before turning back west to Albany. 3 weeks in mid to late July.

skyzo 03-31-11 10:20 AM

I plan on doing two self-supported tours over the summer. First one will be starting mid May cruising down the coast from Vancouver,BC to Redding,CA about 1,200miles
Next will be another one in August most likely in Canada about 400 miles

I plan on doing a loop very close to that in August. What time are you guys leaving?

xilios 03-31-11 10:46 AM

We were thinking of a central Germany tour in June, but thought it a bit boring so now we head south (over the Alps) to Nice and fly back home to Maastricht.
