Nancy: Your daddy’s right boy. Now put that thought outta your head this instant.
John: That’s right boy. Don’t ever talk about things you’ve accomplished. That’s just wrong.
Nancy: If I hear another word of this, you’ll get a whippin’.
Now I'm getting triggered. Thanks..

Just kidding (sort of). That's not how we spoke in our family, but the attitude and atmosphere was the same. You made a good point.

Well, here is YOU giving an interview in NEW YORK CITY while your kids were in Central or South America (so you say) on your tour a year or two ago (2009 or 2010) . Funny, how you could find time (and the money) to fly YOURSELF up to the United States giving TV interviews but you couldn't take the kids.

Sorry, gotta call em as I see em. Sorry Nancy, this tour was all about you, not about them.

So, when exactly did advocating and/or publicizing cyclotouring become a bad thing? Are we keeping our big mutual interest a secret these days? I really don't understand the negativity, it's not like Nancy is the first touring cyclist to get some media attention, and I think it's all for the better. The closer to mainstream our odd activities become, the more goodies we get!

As she stated in the interview, she flew there to pick up supplies and a new wheel for her bike. So yeah, paying for airline tickets for the entire family to do that would make so much sense.

I read through the first half this thread and was a bit gutted it went down the road it did. I hate listening to pessimists, even if they try to pass themselves off as something else………
For me you are an inspiration! I can’t think of anything worst then a life with no risk. I look forward to reading more about your trip!

This whole thread is petty on both sides; the kind of arguing where both sides finish fighting and feel slightly embarrassed.

" As a parent/educator I believe that the best way to raise my kids to become productive members of society is to integrate them into that society and teach them how to excel, not to remove them from it."

Maybe if my kids were complete idiots I would worry about their becoming productive members of society. Such a limited goal, indicative of the "educator's" point of view that they are just grinding out sausage for the pleasure of industry.

I have run into kids who have had these amazing experiences and found it impossible to settle into normal life because nothing else measures up. Whether that turns out to be a good thing or not for them is not so easy to identify.
