Monsoon or Typhoon.....panniers that is!
 

I'm planning a feww weekend tours and wondered which Axiom bags you would recommend. Im thinking the smaller monsoon bags as the stays arent super long on my Vaya ans I think they'll be big enough for weekender packing. What do you guys think? Any better suggestions?

While I owned a set of Monsoons and the kept my stuff dry for a number of years. Since replaced with Oltlieb Front Rollers (pretty much the same size). I don't know if I could have got away with them for rear panniers... pack very little and you might get away with it.

When I used them for rear panniers it was for around town errands and such.

I like the simple closure they offer... I like the fact that they kept my stuff dry. I didn't much like the mounting system... while it always stayed connected to the rack.... The mounting hooks are funky but functional.. the plastic that covers the hooks wears off quick. Makes for functional but ugly.

For just a little more I would seek out the Ortliebs... For me it was money well spent.

If money just isn't possible for them.... The Monsoons will serve you well for many years.

Unless you're a minimalist, and unless you know for certain that your touring will be limited to a few, occasional, overnights, be careful not to buy too small. When I started touring, had no idea it would turn into an avocation, and consequently bought too small. Cost me in the long run.

FWIW, I tour unsupported with Axiom Seymore for kitchen/food and Champlain for tent/clothes, with waterproof covers, plus a rack pack for sleeping gear. Great to have room for extra food, water, and clothes when needed. Total weight 30-50 lbs depending on the season and route. Extra weight is really not very noticeable.
