'very tight' is in this case out near the extremes of the tensile strength
of the steel, itself.. Really hard , hurts your hand on the lever, painful, tight. a BoB skewer, is also in shear force from the load on the ends , But in a normal use there is mainly a tensile load pulling on the skewer shaft weakest point is the transition to the threading. |

In lieu of spare skewers, carry a couple of spare conical springs that go on skewers. I have inadvertently removed skewer nut from skewer when loosening to remove wheel; conical spring fell off and bounced away.

I think they are there to keep the acorn nut and QR end and away from the lawyers lips if they exist on the front fork. But the centring of the skewer for easy insert/removal seems to be the primary reason. Anyone can get by quite adequately without them.
