Boy, am I glad this topic came up. I've been doing practice runs w/a fully loaded trailer and was getting bummed out by my average speed (usually around 10-12mph on a combo of hills and flat). I had been looking at blogs, etc, and most seemed to say that they averaged much higher, so you all have made me feel a lot better! :thumb:

dengi, I suspect that the cross section of posters here pretty much average out a good range of rider differences, and as we all know, its the uphills that bring down the avg speed so much, and so much more than on a road bike without the weight of all our stuff.
What I have always noticed personally is that while my speed will increase slightly over the course of a trip, or the course of the riding season, what is more apparent is just not being so bagged at the end of a long day. |
On my recent tour from Spain back to the UK fully loaded, my average was 11mph over 760 miles and 10 days of cycling. It involved 29,000 feet of ascent over the whole trip starting with the Pyrenees so that slowed the average down not that i was really that concerned with it.

12 MPH. It seems there is little difference between fully loaded and not. The Surly LHT just does what it wants. LOL

How fast do I ride? 20 yrs. ago I typically averaged about 11 mph over the course of a day, day to day. Now that I am over 60, have had heart bypass surgery and assorted accumulated aches and pains, I average more like 8 mph.

And then there is hill climbing. I'm just guessing at gradient because so few hills are posted. I can sustain riding in my granny gear for slopes up to 6%. For 8% to 12% hills, I need to stop and rest about every 1000 metres. I have to walk my loaded bike up hills greater than 12% grade. Unfortunately, the only solution to this is to ride more hills. Yech! Riding a fully loaded touring bike up 8-12 percent grades for 1000 meters is a very impressive feat on it's own. Take pride in that. |
Hmm now I feel better too.I do about 7 to 10 and can do 24.1 down hill.I use my breaks I,m not going over 25mph no way.If you ever hit a dog at that speed you know you want feel good.LoL

10 good, 12 too, sometimes 4,,,,sometimes 30,, last year we pushed this south wind from hell all freakin day, up hill, 6 I think was top all day. walk faster,,,

I'm slow, I like to stop a lot, and I haul a big heavy trailer.
The average of my average speed is, on average, 8.5mph :D On flattish terrain, I try to cruise around 12mph. When I fall below 10mph without a good excuse(hill, headwind), I feel kinda lame. I usually avoiding looking at my speed, for that reason. These numbers are figured from several one or two night trips over the last few months. Lots of headwind, no mountains. Hopefully once I leave on the big trip it won't get worse. Every time I slowly chug up a hill, I think "Oh god what if this went on for miles what would I do?". Going to find out soon.... |
It's always nice to get into double figures. 10mph. You dont get the joggers coming past.
Never, ever get off and push. Get off and drink. Get off and adjust something. Get off and look at an interesting flower. But never get off and push! |
On a recent 12-day (630 mile) trip, I averaged 10.9 mph (17.5 km/h). That's moving time. My bike weighed 75-80 lbs (35 kg). I climbed an average of 3,300 ft (1000 m) each day. Yeah, I'm a bit of a numbers geek (e.g., I averaged 21,822 pedal revolutions per day). You can read about my trip at http://www.crazyguyonabike.com/doc/SLC-Durango2011.
Here is a profile that shows the correlation between elevation (green line) and my speed (blue line). http://bruff.com/posts/UT-CO-2011/GarminProfile.jpg |
I get from 10 to 13 average depending on flat or rollers. That's with a 42 LB bike bare and the load to be added to that. I must say I'm embarrassed at how much faster others say they go compared to 10 MPH.
|
On our tandem, we average about 12mph in ordinary hilly terrain. We cruise at 16-18mph on the flat. We've hit over 50 descending, great fun.
|
Sometimes I'm so loaded I can't ride at all......I plan days at 10MPH.
