I hate the wind noise, too. We ride a tandem, so I (captain) get a lot of it, especially in the mountains. I like the idea of duct tape on a helmet strap. I'll try it. I always wear a headband, but I can't get it to cover my ears at all. I can pull a skullcap or do-rag down over them, but that feels hot when it's not cold out.

Looks like they came up with about 92 dB for 50 mph wind. My typical touring speed, 10 mph; typical Kansas wind, 30 mph; worst case, 40 mph -- doesn't even show up on the chart.

50 mph downhill on a long downhill road with no curves? (Where can I find one of those?) You'll hit the bottom in 15 minutes or less.

Sounds like this is not a safety issue, it's a mental toughness issue. Can't help you with that.

Sorry, but I couldn't resist! But as far as a "real" response goes, earplugs seem to help. However if they aren't put in correctly you hear a whistling sound which is worse than just the wind. Sorry for hurting your feelings :(

My feelings aren't hurt. I just don't understand why people troll threads for no reason. There are better sites for wasting time.

I have to say I've never been bothered by or really noticed wind noise (except when it makes a head/tail wind obvious... ie tons of noise and going 10mph or no noise and going 25mph) but on my commute this morning having read this thread yesterday I kept getting annoyed by it lol. It wasn't too bad after I got going a bit and was "in the zone" but when I first started it was bugging the heck out of me lol.

On a constructive note I wonder what frequency range wind noise generally occurs at... A quick google search suggests ~250hz. Nevermind I was thinking it might be lower than that (and was going to suggest that even if you're going fast 92dB @ low frequency would be irrelevant... if the frequency was low enough that is... depending on the weighting for that 92dB I suppose... I'll shut up now with all of the qualifications to the statement that I didn't even make lol)

It may have a peak at 250Hz, but wind noise is...well...noise, meaning that it's broad spectrum. Remind me again when I'm at work and I'll post up a spectrogram of some stock wind recordings we have.

I like head bands, and made one a little bit bigger ( actually my wife made it :-) than what is sold in shops. It works great, and covers my ears just fine.

Well, good question, I have ears that really, really stick out from the side of my head and have been lumped with the nickname "trophy" since a young age. I really struggle with the annoyance of bad head wind days while on long tours , so depending on the severity I put a bandana around my ears which helps most times followed buy those little fluro safety disposable ear plugs if its a hellish head wind.
Hope this helps..........I get heaps of the earplugs from work and can send ya some if your not sure what i'm on about.
Happy Touring
