how much does your bike weigh
I weighed my 2010 Novara Randonee and was surprised to see the scale read 32lbs. This is with bottle cages, an adjustable stem, rear rack, and cycle computer. Seems heavy to me. What does your bike weigh?
|
25.5 lbs with rear rack.
24.25 lbs as shown but skinnier, lighter tires: http://farm6.static.flickr.com/5226/...9a10acd6_b.jpg I've never weighed it in trailer mode... http://farm3.static.flickr.com/2647/...b1676e90_b.jpg |
Around 23lbs with 700x35 tires, 3 bottle cages, and all other components. Racks/luggage aren't included in that number. My frame is 54cm.
|
Just weighed it today in preparation for my tour which begins tomorrow. Late 90s Specialized Hard Rock mtb. 35 pounds. That's with Planet Bike Cascadia fenders, two bottle cages (with full water bottles), two rear platform racks (one mounted on the front, obviously), and those boat anchor 1.75" Schwalbe Marathon Pluses (ha ha).
|
Last time I weighed it the total was 49 lbs. with the rear rack, three water bottle cages (two with full bottles), sleeping bag, tent, Thermarest, two panniers, assorted clothing, one day's worth of food, various tools, camera, GPS, iPod, lights, etc.
|
Mid-30's with rack but without panniers.
|
33 lbs with racks/cages. 50 cm, aluminum.
|
I don't have any modern light weight bikes, all my bikes are lugged steel jobs with no carbon fiber parts, my lightest is a all factory original 88 Fuji Club Sport, and with the cage it weighs 20.6 pounds, which is not what the catalog said it would weigh at 23 pounds. I doubled checked the weight with one at a bike shop. Not sure why the weight difference, but it's there.
|
54cm Surly LHT, 33.6 pounds. Racks around, 3 bottle cages. Fully loaded, sans mini laptop...76.5 pounds.
My tour partner's Kona Sutra, 56cm, racks around, 3 bottle cages, 33.8 pounds. |
Trek 520 17" tour bike dry weight 33 pounds including everything "permanantly" attached to the bike - racks, fenders, cages, bar-bag mount, computer mount. Not including anything "carried" - bottles, packs, gear, tools, computer etc.
With the same criteria: Scott Cr1 SL 47cm- new carbon road bike - 14.9 with training wheels, 14.5 with race wheels. Wylder Queen of the Road 49cm - older titanium road bike - 17.5 with race wheels Santa Cruz Juliana XS - MTB - about 23 |
jackb, Well, you made me go and measure the weight. ;)
'95 23" Cannondale T700. 27.5 lbs. road ready which includes a frame pump, three cages, wireless speedo, pedals and an OMM rear rack. I don't usually run it with the fenders on, but they're perhaps another lb. When ridden unladen a seat bag adds about another two lbs. So far my light touring (day trips) cargo hasn't exceeded an additional 23 lbs., IIRC. I'm actually surprised that it didn't weigh more, my roadies in road ready condition have always been 1 lb. or more than others with similar bikes (Cannondales). Brad |
38 pound 54cm Surly LHT.
Front and rear racks, fenders,Brooks champion flyer saddle,Carradice barley bag with tools, pump and rain jacket. Three water bottle cages,SON dyno hub, head light and three tail light's. That's a normal riding load minus the water bottles. For touring it's closer to 85-90 pounds. |
Now we're talking touring bikes, the true touring bike I have is a 85 Schwinn LeTour Luxe, without the panniers but with 3 water bottle cages I'm at 25.8 pounds. I have a 07 Mercian touring bike but closer to a sport geometry weighs 23.5.
|
10 lbs difference in weight is a 3.3 per cent delta on 300 lbs combined rider+bike+load on a touring bike. Though it is interesting, it's not as materially different as the rider's shape and the gearing of your bike.

The arvon1 weighs 40 lbs without water bottles, panniers or fenders.

Did the catalogue just give one weight with a notation that it was for a particular size, or did it list weights for each size?
The Suntour ARX derailleur system on the bike was not a good derailleur, one of the very few failures Suntour had, it shifts more like a Shimano of the time period, not sharp and crisp like the Superbe, Cyclone, Sprint, and VG series, and it had a weird tube that comes out of the rear derailleur that was subject to breakage. Fuji realize this stuff that right away and the next year the same model came with Cyclone Mark II derailleurs; I may switch to those if ARX begin to fail. |

Well, there you go, I feel totally inadequate to discuss anything related to numbers now.

way to much especially when I'm climbing hills. |
Just under 60lbs:

My Thorn Nomad Mk2 weighs 39.2 pounds. That's the 565L size. I've got a Schmidt generator front hub, front and rear Thorn racks, Brooks Champion Flyer saddle, Schwalbe Marathon Supreme 26x2 tires.
The way I usually ride, with three full water bottles, saddle bag with supplementary clothing and repair supplies, and handlebar bag with clickstand, flashlight, reading glasses (getting old ain't fun!) - it comes to 46.1 pounds. Yeah, and I carry about 30 pounds of excess flab around my abdomen. I think my weight reduction program needs to start there! |
Sounds like I'm not the only one sucking wind going up steep hills. What made me aware of the heaviness of my tourer is the single speed bike I recently bought as a result of a test ride of my son's single speed that he bought when he was living in Berlin. Eighteen pounds. As soon as I rode his, I bought a SS for myself. Now I can't bear to get on even my road bike (22lbs) much less my tourer. Of course touring is different than cruising around town, but I used to like my Novara for casual rides around town. Haven't been on any of my other bikes since I bought the SS. surprisingly, I can get this thing up fairly steep hills, though I have to work at it out of the saddle.

It is heavier than air, because it does not float above the ground..
With a Touring camp set aboard, I liked the way the heavier framed bike felt, going down the road, than the lighter one, that flexed a little with every pedal stroke. it, by design, better handled the load, packed on it.. |
LHT, racks, B-67, 2.0 XRs = 34 lbs.
LHT, with gear = 76 lbs. LHT with gear & supplies (water, food, fuel) = 84 lbs. LHT, Gear, Supplies, & me = 250 lbs |
mine is set up for light touring (no camping gear). with the rear rack, i think it was about 21 lbs.

Along with getting the weight using this method it also shows you the center of gravity. |
