Shimano Double ring availability
I have a double on my Salsa Vaya that has a 50 on the big ring that I do not use much at all. I would like to change out to something smaller and more useable. Also, rather than going huge in the back I wouldcrather drop the small a few teeth as well.
I will try my LBS, but they aren't open now:D. Do any of you know what might be available for the Compact Double? Anyone switch out theirs? |
Are you sure you have a Shimano compact? The Vaya has Sram Cranksets as OE.
Shimano does not supply a range of ring sizes, they only offer repacement chainrings. Here is a great source for chainrings, Peter White also provides very good info: http://www.peterwhitecycles.com/chainrings.asp You might consider a Cyclocross crankset, these have 46 & 36 chainrings. |
For a 110 BCD (Compact) crank, you are limited in the smallest ring- 34- that you can have. But for the outer ring you can get many different sizes from 38 to 50 and beyond. There is a compact triplizer available from Origin8? that will replace the inner ring and add a standard 74 BCD granny ring, which can go down to 24 teeth. But then you'll have a triple crank, and need a new derailleur, shifter, bottom bracket, etc.

There are several sources of after market chainrings
You have 130, or 110 bcd.. minimal tooth counts.. 130 .. 38t ; 110 .. 34t, though the French TA company machines the physical minimum 33 tooth .. |
Good sources and I will dig into them. I just looked at my inner rings and have a 34 on the small ring. I bought the Vaya frame and built it out with Shimano components. I was used to the shifting of Shimano and didn't want to retrain myself for the SRAM. Went with Mavic rims though, with XT hubs.
