I find that's stretching it bit. I've understood "fully loaded" mostly to imply carrying camping and cooking gear for your trip, and that your bike LOOKS fully loaded = lots of crap ;) rather than an ultralite set up, for instance.

I'm think I'm starting to understand. The OP is riding this tour HIMSELF, he's not trying to get anyone to go with him, and he's preparing publicity materials to get other people to donate to his charity.

There's a language barrier, I think, even though we are both speaking English, we aren't having a very easy time understanding each other. peace, out.

George, what do you mean by "everything"? Is that everything necessary for camping or is that everything needed if you decide to stop and play around of golf or does "everything" include the kitchen sink? It could ya know! I find the word "everything" a bit ambiguous. Could you change "everything" to, "my camping gear", I would like it better if you,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,

:D
Just messing with you George, I couldn't resist! What you have sounds good.:)

george12345 12-27-11 08:17 AM

theres really nothing to understand I am going on a BYCLE trip 50 miles, 25 miles there camping for the night and 25 miles back, call it whatever you want a bike trip, a cycle tour, a camping night out, going camping, a bike ride, whatever, use your own injenuity don't even think about, some people might even call it a short tour on a bike, a Sunday ride, going for a spin, out with the bike, get the drift
I have the answer I wanted
thanks george ps its good to know someone has a good sense of humor DW99

staehpj1 12-27-11 08:25 AM

My Interpretation of a FLBT is

Its when a person will cycle on a bike and carry with him/her all the necessities needed to survive.

If you are trying to market something I wouldn't use the word "survive." It can suggest a bare existence. Also, if that were an accurate definition, it would exclude anyone who resupplies (e.g., buys groceries during the trip, eats out during the trip) during a FLBT.

Hi BigBlueToe what did you think of the Bob trailer compared to panniers
george

Hi George. I prefer panniers, but my data is not based on a single variable trial. My first long tour with my Bob was on my old (1992) Nashbar tourer. It was a 21-speed with Biopace chainrings. I put a 24-tooth granny on it, but I don't think the cassette had a very big low. I pulled the Bob over the North Cascades Highway, and it felt like I was pulling an anchor. I kept trying to shift to a lower gear and there simply wasn't one.

Before my next tour the following year I bought a new bike, new racks, and new panniers - a whole new rig. I was very happy to get back to racks and panniers. On that tour I went over another pass and felt like the low gear I had was sufficient - I wasn't searching for a lower one, and I wasn't suffering.

Another issue with the Bob is that I had to carry an extra tube. The Bob's tube was Schrader and my bike's tubes were Presta, so when I wanted to top off the tire pressure I had to switch the nozzle on my pump - just a bit annoying.

Since my comparison of the Bob vs. panniers was on different bikes, it's not very scientific, but I prefer panniers. Having said that, I pulled a Bob on my tour on the Great Divide last summer because my new 29er had issues with installing racks. The Bob allowed me to do the tour. I think a Bob is a great thing in that it can allow someone to tour on a bike that isn't set up for racks.

george12345 12-27-11 12:09 PM

Hi BigBlueToe great info thank, its just that back in 06 I was thinking of buying a Bob, when I saw two dutch people pulling a Bob each, it was a tour around lough Neagh in the North of Ireland, when I met them, they thought that the Bob trailer was the best thing ever, but I was thinking that it would be like pulling, as you say an Anchor, Im glad I didnt spend the dosh
