Owner Review - Ortlieb Bike-Packer Plus Panniers
Hi
I have had a chance to write up my initial experiences with the Ortlieb Bike-Packer Plus panniers. Overall very happy with them as you would expect given their reputation. I feel that they are great panniers. They fit well, they travel well on the racks and they pack well. So far I am very impressed with them and I feel paying the extra for the QL2 mounting system and the Cordura material was worth it.
Probably a bit of given really given the reputation of Ortlieb panniers. That said always interested in others experiences as well and any tips you may have for using them.
Regards
Andrew

you get 3 pairs? a set for the racks on the bike too?
The red does fade in the sun, though black does too, just looks
like less .. for a bit longer .

I scored an older pair of these and agree with this guy's reivew. I'd be a lot less interested in Bike Packers without the older top compression straps and handle. The other thing is that having used them for a couple of trips now, having pockets is a less important feature to me. The Back Rollers are enough lighter that, being a weight weenie, I'd probably get those if I were buying new bags. But I don't see these wearing out for a looong time, so color me happy with my Bike Packers.

Got sport packers on the front rack of my bike friday,
since the rack is above the wheel , rather than low riders,
I unscrewed the top rail added some webbing to join the 2 into one item,
then screwed them back together.

While a great idea, I think that'd be less useful for the full-sized, heavier Bike Packers. Even singly, the fully loaded ones are a handful. That's why I found the top handles, um... handy.

Very happy with it so far, other than the poor quality of the fasteners for the mudguard (fender). For those interested, it is a Extrawheel Voyager and I have written up a bit of a review here.

Hey andrew , how far a of a distance is it from the axle centerline ,
to the bottom of the bag mount loop.
IE,
Wonder if a 406 20" wheel would do?,
and so, Wonder what the ground clearance would be..

I bought a set after my bike with custom racks was stolen. As of now, the panniers I had been using only work with the stolen racks (I am am looking to modify them), so I needed new panniers.
I find them a bit floppy. When not loaded with a high volume of stuff, the compression straps don't cinch down tightly. (You can see what I mean in the attached photo.) The flap for the outside pocket can be hard to keep folded down. If you het water in the pocket it will pool there until you dump it, which is a testament to the waterproofness of the bags. One fo the side compression straps came detached after only six days of use. Wayne at The Touring Store warrantied the bag without delay. I am definitiely impressed with the QL2 system, at least the top portion. I still get some rattle at the bottom. Finally, I was surprised at how the lack of individual compartments wasn't a big deal. I typically don't need to access may different items while on the road. Those that I am amost likely to need (e.g., rain gear) I place near the top of my panniers for easy access.
Overall, I am not sorry I bought them. If I sound very critical it's because my other panniers and racks were made by Robert Beckman's so I guess I am a little spoiled. I hope I am successful in modifying them to fit my current racks.
