Touring Mindsets, Quiet Times with Nature, Engadgeted -- and Occupied with What?
Part of me (I don't think I'm alone in this though -- maybe there are some others out there who can relate to it) sides very strongly with this sort of approach to touring:
mobile.nytimes.com/2012/01/01/opinion/sunday/the-joy-of-quiet.xml
Yet immediately after reading that, I came across some rave reviews of a new tablet/laptop/netbook killer, made by a company I like, and then found myself getting inspired all over again, once again, toward (or is it more like drawn into?) buying into another gadget:
m.engadget.com/default/article.do?artUrl=https://www.engadget.com/2011/12/01/asus-eee-pad-transformer-prime-review/&category=classic&postPage=1&page=1&icid=eng_art_prev
[Please excuse the URLs. Can someone help by listing the correct links?; I am unable to do it right now. Much thanks.][The first is a piece by Pico Iyer, ''The Joy of Quiet''; the second is a review of the Asus Transformer Prime, by the staff at Engadget.]

The internet is a tool, just like anything else. If you feel the need to use it to record your trip for posterity, more power to you. If you choose to bring nothing and just re-live the trip in your mind, then that's cool too. I'd probably be somewhere in between. Probably would not bring an actual computer, but might bring a tablet for reading and/or information, GPS, etc. for emergencies.

if you read the tour journals on cgoab, it seems like some people are constantly concerned with charging their electronics. I'm not sure I could be bothered with that sort of thing.

Yeah, I've wondered about that many times. I guess it depends on where I'm sleeping, if I have access to an AC outlet or not.

I do longer journal updates and upload pictures if I happen to have access to a computer at a library, motel, or host's home. If not I don't worry about it.
Oh and I also take a camera, with a couple batteries and a tiny aftermarket charger. Like the phone it needs relatively infrequent charging, and opportunities to charge are frequent enough with no real effort.
