Thanks for that geographic factoid. According to Wikipedia: "The highway's eastern terminus is in Boston, Massachusetts, at Kenmore Square, where it meets Route 2," and I live in Kenmore Square. My wife and I rode cross country from Laguna Beach to Washington DC in 1977, so I enjoy reading about cross-country rides, and now I'm intrigued about riding Route 20. Actually, if I'm ever fortunate to get a large amount of time and resources, I dream of a perimeter tour of the US.

Why not do a Portland to Portland ride? After all, Portland OR was named for Portland ME.

I would not recommend riding on Hwy 20 west of Philomath, OR. Heck, the cars drive off that roadway on a fairly regular basis. It has lots of blind curves, speeding motorists, trucks and a less than generous shoulder. There are better ways to the coast. I'm not even sure I would ride the stretch of Hwy 20 from Sisters unless I could carefully choose my day of week and time of day

Cape Henlopen was the start of our 2008 cross-country tour. American Discovery Trail has a route from there to D.C. where you can pick up the C&O/GAP. Ohio can be crossed by using Columbus Outdoor Pursuits "B Route", which was great except for their route through Cincinnati. Don't miss the Katy trail in Missouri, it was our favorite.

You could start on the DelMarVa coast (say Rehoboth Beach)...bikes aren't allowed on the Bay Bridge but https://www.kentislandexpress.com/ has taxi vans & transport bikers for something like $20 IIRC. Eastern Shore is very flat, maybe that would make for an easy warmup for the hills ahead. Eastern Shore has great roads for biking: many of the smaller roads have little traffic & the bigger roads have wide shoulders. Plus there is a nice east-west bike path crossing Kent Island. For bragging rights one has to go coast-to-coast (including dipping bike tire into the water) eh?
