Ultalight tarp (for hammocks)
I saw this in Wally World:
http://www.walmart.com/ip/First-Up-T...-Wall/19902104 It is 10' x 10', lightweight and $14. I'm going to try it out as a hammock rain fly. It says on the package tag, "This material is not waterproof. It is extremely water-resistant. Touching the fabric when wet will cause water to wick through the fabric." I'll give it a hosing down, in the backyard, this weekend and report back. |
And here is a tarp on the other end of the spectrum.

Yea, that's great gear, if you can afford it. :)

I use one of these - It's somewhere in the middle-price range, but holds up well in rain.
Outdoor Equipment Supplier I have the MacCat Deluxe for my hammock. Love it  Judy |
That Tera Nova is a bit small for a hammock, much smaller than 9X9 and it's tough to get enough coverage. I'd take one more like this
|
I have a tarp from wildernesslogics.com that weighs about 9 oz (plus guylines) and although I can't recall the exact dimensions, gives full hammock coverage plus some room underneath to stow a bike, and if I rig it in "porch" mode, to sit under.

Kelty makes a few tarps that work well. I have one, and it is much better than the one that came with my Hennessy. It was almost as good an upgrade as the zipper-mod to my netting was.

Here's my tarp: https://lh5.googleusercontent.com/-z....hang0004.jpeg I did a catenary cut, but a simple rectangle can be easily sewn. |

It is 14oz. which is nothing groundbreaking. If it holds back the water, then it's a bargain at $14.

In the ultralite department, the high tech 'cuben fabric' used by this outfit looks intriguing. Available in tarps, tents, and for DIY. $$s.
|
I just strung it up and hosed it down, in the backyard. I give it a 7 out of 10. The fabric completely kept the water out.
Unfortunately, it is not 10' x 10' It is 9'6" x 6'6" My confusion came from misreading the label. It says it is designed to be used with a 10' x 10' gazebo. I mistook this for meaning that this piece was that size. Also, there is a seam running the length of the fabric at about 5'. This will Have to be sealed. There was some wicking along this seam. For the price, it's a good asym tarp and I would call it great if it didn't have the seam in it. |

My interest in it is for a single wall, net fringed tent. According to BearPaw, it's more waterproof than sylnylon, tougher and lighter. Pricer too. Nice that they'll sell it by the yard for DIY. I've requested a sample to put to the test.
A Mountain Laurel Designs Trailstar is on my list, it's not quite what you're looking for, but it's a pretty awesome shelter. Add an inner net tent and you have a great looking shelter for all weather. http://cache.backpackinglight.com/ba...0051_50384.jpg |
This knowledgeable answer to my post on CG.

That expensive tarp is likely .51 oz Cuben fiber. You can buy it by the yard and make your own for far less than half the price they are charging. You can buy Cuben and sil nylon here and also gromets, bonding tape, etc.
