San Diego to Vegas: info?
Our trip from Canada to Mexico went well (4000 miles), although we turned back after a week in Baja. Roads were a little too narrow for my daughter´s trailer. We also ditched the BOB trailer (breaking spokes) in favor of front panniers on both my wife and my own bike. Now we are relaxing in Panama before returning to San Diego to continue our trek. We want info on routes out of San Diego or Chula Vista. Our end destination will probably be Vegas, although nothing is written in stone. Thanks in advance for any input. (P.S. Customs into Mexico and back into the States were a joke, we basically got the red carpet treatment. It helps to have a two year old with you sometimes!)

http://www.efgh.com/bike/old395.htm <- this will get you as far as Temecula. There aren't too many roads going into Las Vegas from California other than the 15. Where's your start point in Chula Vista?? There's quite a few routes from there to the start of that route.

Well, between Temecula and Corona, you will have to travel on Old Temescal Canyon Road after you wind your way through the Lake Elsinore valley. It starts after Main, north of Lake Elsinore in Aberhill (it may be called Lake St., depending on the map). It's a nice, although narrow route. I take Scouts on this road for the Historic Cycling Award.
Be aware that Temescal Canyon Road is closed between Wierick and Cajalco roads. I'm not sure how to get around this, short of going on the freeway for a couple miles. I will try to find a route and get back to you. Also, there is a lot of freeway construction between Victorville and Barstow. Carry A LOT of water when cycling in the desert. Try to avoid long rides out here in the summer, you just can't carry enough water. It will easily be over 100F for most of the day. Your daily water requirement will approach 15 liters. |
from the map, i'd guess you'll be going thru 29 palms, north to amboy, which
will put you on old highway 66. get water in amboy if available. lots of water. if you head east on 66, next certain water will be a truckstop just north of the i-40 junction. 66 will continue to juction hwy 95 which goes north to henderson and vegas. 66 is very good condition, plenty of free camping sites. the section of 95 south to i-40 the same. i can't say about the route north. about 10 miles east of amboy, you can go north on kelbaker road. be prepared for a long (30-mile) climb. not terribly steep, just loooong, into the mojave national preserve. the dot on the map marked kelso is just an old railroad depot under renovation. no water. at this point i headed nw to baker, but i believe you can go ne to cima and into nevada. from there you hit the 164, and it "appears" you can get to either i-15 or hwy 95. |
