Nestucca River Road current conditions
Cross posted from PNW subforum as there isn't much traffic over there:
Does anyone know of the current conditions on Nestucca Road? I was thinking of riding to the coast from portland, maybe camping, but started to wonder if there was snow on this road. |
I doubt there's snow. Are you talking about Nestucca or Little Nestucca? I've only ridden those rodes on motorcycles, but I bet they would be good for bicycles too.
Where would you camp? |
ODOT has a road condition line to call, perhaps even a webpage..
|
Upper Nestucca, Little Nestucca.... all of it
It's not a state highway is it? Does ODOT have jurisdiction over county highways? |
|
Love Nestucca. Scenic and quiet. If you camp at the BLM bring a water filter to fish potable water out of the river. Also, bathrooms may be closed, so a trowel would be good too.
|
State departments of transportation only take care of state highwyas.
Yeah, Nestucca Rd looks pretty sweet. Would you do it this time of year? |

On the BLM website it states that water is available at the campgounds, is that not true? |
Sweet Road
It's a fantastic road. It should be snow free, but I'm not absolutely certain. The BLM Dept out of Salem should know if it's snow free. There are 4 miles of gravel - that stretch is probably going to be muddy. If you decide to ride all the way to Pacific City, it's better to head north on 101 at Beaver for 3.5 miles and turn left on Sandlake Road than to head south on 101. There's a county campground tucked in behind the Inn at Cape Kiwanda across the street from the Pelican Brewery.
Did you end up doing your trip last weekend? (I saw a post from the ski website I visit that someone went skiing on Mary's Peak last weekend. - I'm not sure how low the snow started.) |
Didn't do the trip out of Eugene as we decided that the drive down there wasn't worth it for just a weekend trip, and our ride left early friday while we were still at work.
|
Anyone know if the bike racks on the tillamook to portland bus can accommodate a touring bike with a front rack attached? The kind of rack with a loop over the front wheel?

The one we stopped at had no water except the river.

I've used The Wave (Tillamook bus) several times with my LHT that has a Jandd Extreme front rack. Didn't have any problems except once when the driver was driving like a bat-out-of-hell, going too fast esp. around corners. The hook came undone a couple times, prompting her to stop the bus and make me go outside and reattach the hook. |

I took it years ago in the late spring.
The unpaved section can be pretty muddy after heavy winter rains. (Which is the case this year) Also there can be washouts that close the road to cars - but bicycles can usually get thru. Call the Ore/Wash BLM or Tillamook County Road Dept. |
I did call the BLM and they mentioned that the main road should be clear of snow, but yes, the gravel section may be muddy.
This route looks simply amazing, but unfortunately I was not able to secure a day off on Monday, and would not like to do this trip rushed, so it's been shelved for later in the year. Hey, I guess it is a good thing to be busy at work these days.... Instead I think we might head out towards the columbia river gorge. Thanks everyone for the info. |
Use caution onBald Mountain access road descent towards bible creek road.
I rode this route last Saturday 9/9/2017. The road was clear and in excellent condition with the exception of one 100 yard section on the descent just after the Sheridan peak turnout. The sign says the road is paved all the way to bible creek road...NOT SO!!!! 60 stitches later I am here to tell you that after reviewing the sign saying the road was paved I started a nice easy descent only to be met by a section that was not paved and filled with baseball sized rocks that will cause you to hit the deck. There is no warning. After you summit Sheridan peak, take the descent to bible creek sloooooow.
