Pannier Rubbing Rack

I've been using a tubus rack & ortlieb panniers for commuting daily for some months & started to notice that in a couple places the black coating on the rack is getting rubbed off, in one place it's down to the steel.
I am little worried about it, not sure if I shouldn't be. Anyone have this happening? Anything I could do? I tried covering it with some tape, but there's probably a better way.
Thanks!

Tape might work. Have you thought of smearing on clear silicon rubber like RTV? Once dried, it doesn't like to let go. My brother uses it on the bottom of his running shoes where it wears. Running daily, it is good for several weeks.

don't worry about it. You might consider wrapping the tube in question with Gorilla tape, electrical tape, cloth handlebar tape and securing the rack with a bungie so it can't rub, rub, rub. It's not the steel that's wearing, it's the plastic rubbing up against it.

Rather than treating the symptom check to see what is moving to cause the abrasion. Can you tighten or adjust the hooks or lower clip for a more snug fit? Or slightly reposition the pannier on the rack? Or see if the rack is slightly bend? Fine tuning early can save you grief later.

I use electrical tape on the rack where the panniers rub. They rattle less on the bumps.

Sometimes I have to replace the tape after a few hundred miles because the rack may wear through it or the tape may shift.

I have used clear nail polish where there is bare metal to prevent rust. It is convenient with a built in brush, only takes a minute and dries fast. I wish they made matte black nail polish, but I have not looked very hard so maybe they do and I have not seen it?

I am a homebrewer, thus I have various diameters and lengths of tubing for the beer. For my racks I cut lengths of 1/4" tubing lengthwise and wrap it around the rack tubing similar to insulating wrap for home water lines. It does not add much to the diameter of the rack tubes, it quiets any clanging of metal clips on the rack as I ride and prevents the racks from getting scratched or gouged. I can replace as needed.

I really don't see that as a problem. I'd just ignore it myself, but if you must do something tape it.

I would agree that it is not a problem; mostly a cosmetic one. My self-diagnosed OCD likes the protection of the tubing. I think the same reason dirty panniers end up bothering me after a long tour.

You can build the OD of the tubing up with more stuff, though then the
bag hook insert comes out to fit. over14mm then ..

Id just ride the bike . have the powder coat redone in, say, 5 years.

Which is one reason a stainless steel rack is really nice.

Tubus racks generally come with adhesive sheets that you place where your pannier hooks attach, precisely to prevent this problem. Did you happen to save them? :-)

Mine did the same. I recently sprayed my racks with flat black Rustoleum. I sure it won't last, when touring, but it looks good now.

Thanks for your replies.
I've had electric tape on the rack from the start where the top hooks attach & that is great. The problem is on the side where that big hook slides on. I've tried a little tape there but it rubs off or through after a week or 2.
I'll give some shoe goo a try. Leaving it alone is probably what's gonna happen though at least for now
I think one reason why it happens is I have the pannier pushed back a good amount for heel clearance & the weight isn't evenly spread over the whole triangle area of the rack.
