I have never ridden with fenders. No one in my group of 12 crossing the country had fenders. They are not a necessity, or anywhere close to it.

I commute as well, they are useful for keeping dirt of my drive chain and feet.

Necessity..no. But they do tend to keep most of the water, dirt, sand, debris, etc. off you, your bike and your luggage.

As well as other things, which will become clear when cycling through areas with lots of free-roaming sheep. In the rain.

Suffice to say I *will* use fenders.

Wind tunnel tests show either same with fenders or slight improvement with fenders. No reason not to use them other than image.
