26" light weight tire
Looking for some recommendations for a 26" road tire.. 1.5" width or narrower. Something 500 grams area..
Anyone use any Serfas Drifters? Thanks. |
The Schwalbe Kojaks that I have on my 26" LHT are great as long as you're not going off road in muddy conditions. I use the 2" wide version (570g in non foldable version) but they also make a 1.35" version (295g foldable version, 395g non-foldable). They're comfortable, quiet and offer good grip, also in wet conditions.

I have a Drifter on the back of my LHT. It got me from Sante Fe, NM to NYC. It needs to be replaced now, but it wore well. It flatted a bit more often than the Schwalbe Marathon on the front in the thorny SW, but it's a solid tire for the price and rolls fine on all surfaces.

I just installed one on my wife's LHT. Can't attest to the durability but the price was right and others on the forum recommended it. |
My favourite 26 inch tyre is the Schwalbe Hurricane which comes in at 650-690 grams and is a 2.0 but feels like a road tyre at 70 psi... have not used another tyre that is as bulletproof or gotten so many good reviews from people who's bikes have been refitted with these through my shop.
If tyre clearance is not an issue these are an excellent choice and are quite capable if your adventures also take you off the road where they can be run at 35 psi. I have put well over 10,000 km on a single set of Hurricanes and used them on my touring bike, cargo bikes, and XC mtb and will be riding on them for what will be their 5th season as they do not show any undue wear and still look nearly new. |

Kenda Kwest 26x1.5 530g Both are wire bead (the RTS is available in kevlar bead, but it costs much more and I've never tried it). The Kwest costs less and will outlast the RTS at least 2:1 in mileage, also flats less. It's a great value in my experience. Don't pay more for the 100psi version Kwest, it's no better than the normal (65psi) version, just weighs another 70g. |
We've been using Specialized Fatboys on our tandem on and off for twenty-five years. They only come in 26X1.25 now (100 psi), which makes the name a bit inappropriate. Decent flat protection and we've never felt the need for anything lighter, but they are on a tandem where weight comes in kilograms, not grams.

My favourites are Schwalbe Marathon Slicks. I think they are still out there, though I read they have been discontinued. However there is an equivalent tire. I ride them at 1.5 and they will do just about anything but run like racing tires on blacktop.

346g. Absolutely smooth with no stupid tread pattern. Dirt cheap price. I've used these on mtn descents up to 50mph. |

Tire mounting... surely can be done in the garage.. but on the road is another issue. Which now I am factoring in. Serv T's I referenced above look to be very good from my limited use to date. |

What tube to use for these 1.5's and narrower? Prefer Schrader.
Kendra Quest 1.25's at 400 grams looks like a tire to try. |
Continental SportContact comes in two sizes in 26”: 26x1.3” at 350 gm. and 26x1.6” at 500 gm. I use the 1.6”. They seem pretty fast and are very comfortable. If I were lighter and wanted more speed, I would probably try the 1.3”.
Another candidate is the Vitoria Randonneur Pro. 26x1.5” 510 gm. I have a pair but I haven’t tried them yet. I am happy with the Contis. |
Grand Bois offers a fast 26 x 1.75" tires worthy of consideration for those wanting speed and comfort. Our fleet uses the 700c and 650B counterparts to this tire and we simply stock more of these tires as they have proven to be wonderfully fast and with enough volume to offer a comfortable ride.

I like the Maxxis Xenith. Nice smooth riding tyre. both the wired and folding come in under 500gm. I did have a specialized Fat Boy but found it to be a harsh riding tyre.

Cannondale M700 frame with essentially 650C set up employing the marginally smaller 26" Velocity K535 rim on front.. light 36 H rear 7 cog. |
I have been running 26x2 Marathon Supremes for the past year and a half and they are great. I am closing in on 3000 miles and no flats or punctures.
The 26x1.6 size weigh in at 440grams. |
