first self supported tour complete, hungry for more
My wife and I just finished a 5day 300 mile self supported ride from central Indiana to Lake Michigan and back. It went very smooth and was just fantastic. I am now experiencing a sort of "real-world depression" and can't wait to get back on the road.

Andrew, Those are Tidy Cat kitty litter buckets. You can do a web search and find how-to procedures for making them into panniers. They work great, are roomy, waterproof and can double as an ice bucket/cooler, camp chair, kitchen sink, etc. They are bulky though.

That real-world depression is an interesting phenomenon.
I am sure it is because there has been an internal awakening of an adventurous spirit -- a realisation that we can fend for ourselves outside our comfort zones, plus find new places and experiences that we never thought existed.
And we want to get out there and do it again, NOW!

it was about 120 miles nicely paved bike trails and the rest was mostly county roads and a few busier state roads. The trails are nice, but the county roads in Indiana are not too bad at all and offer varied scenery.

Matt, what's the bike you've been riding there? Seems rather big to me, like the tall head tube!

Its a 2011 Jamis Bosanova 58 cm. I have the stem all the way up too. I really like the bike. Steel frame, beefy carbon fork w/ full rack mounts, disc brakes, handles up to 38c tires(I use 32c on tour, 28 otherwise) brooks B17, all make for a super smooth comfy ride, but it can pick up the pace if I flog it hard enough.

I can relate to the real world depression. I did a short tour and stayed in remote campsites. One afternoon I made it to a town with a campground in their park. I couldn't stand the commotion so I hopped on the bike and rode 25 miles to a quieter place even though there was a Hardees and a convenience store within sight of the town park campground.
