Rockies to San Francisco

Hey folks--

Getting ready to head out in about a week and a half for a cross country tour from Massachusetts to San Francisco with my dad and younger brother. Psyched to get started but as I'm routing, I'm realizing that there are a TON of options for crossing the Rockies but that eventually, you basically have to end up on one of two roads to get across Nevada. So, I was wondering if there were any recommendations in this regard. I've checked out the Western Express ACA route which looks beautiful, but it also doesn't look as direct as perhaps we'd like... I guess we're looking for a nice mix of scenery, (relative) ease, and directness. A friend recommended Cache La Poudre--anyone have any experience with this? We will be taking the Northern Tier from Buffalo to Iowa and from there, it's anyone's guess, so we could enter Colorado anywhere really? Or is worth going through Wyoming instead? Any suggestions would be much appreciated!
