Touring the Norwegian Riviera

I have spent a bit of time working in Minnesota about 10 years ago and fell in love with the place and the people. This Friday I'll be flying into Minneapolis where my friend will pick me up and we'll drive past Duluth to Two Harbors to start our 3 day cycling adventure up the shore of Lake Superior.

I wanted to share this adventure with fellow cyclists on this forum, and I will follow up this thread with the story and pictures.

Here is the route: https://goo.gl/maps/OyhS

Day 1 Two Harbors – Cascade River SP, 75 miles
Day 2 Cascade River SP – Gooseberry Falls SP, 40 miles
Day 3 Gooseberry Falls SP - Twin Harbors, 35 miles

Excited am I? Yes!

When I read the title I thought it was going to be about touring in southern Norway.
why is this region of the USA called the Norwegian Riviera?

It's a region famously settled by immigrants from the Scandinavian countries. The nickname is widely used by Minnesotans. There you will find places like Finland, of all things.

Have a great trip. That's my favorite place on earth, along with the BWCA.

Be careful. There's lots of traffic (RVs, trailers) on 61, especially on the weekends. The Gitchee-Gami trail is not finished, so you'll find yourself on the shoulder quite a bit.

We have concluded our "tour" of the Norwegian Riviera. The route was extremely pleasant with Gitchi Gami trail taking us part of the way, part riding on nice wide shoulder roads, part on reasonable roads, and zero shoulder north Tofte. The traffic on Saturday was heavy largely due to a festival taking place Grand Marais near the end of our 1st day route. This was not an issue until we passed Tofte where the lack of shoulder and proximity to vehicles meant constant tire noise. Despite this, the weather was perfect and the first day was called a total success. Sunday was much quieter, and the weather was just as nice, with the addition of a ~10 mph headwind. Monday's riding was cancelled as one of our friends who was setting up camp for us ahead of our arrival (this was not planned, but it was a nice bonus!) hit a deer taking it and her car out of commission.

We covered a total of 130 miles with a 13.9 mph average on the first day and 10.6 on the second.

We did hear about a fully-loaded touring cyclist with a sign that said "DEAF" on the same Hwy 61 on Saturday, 4th of August. Was it anyone here? :-)

Sounds like a great trip. I just did Minneapolis to Big Pine Lake (Central Minnesota) myself. I usually end up backpacking if I am on the North Shore.
