Yes, on the FS roads between Quil and Sequim. over Bon Jon Pass and real close to Mt. Townsend and down Big Quil Road. the downhill is fabulous.

Just downloaded the "motor vehicle use map" from the ONF site. A free download of the FS roads, sweet...

https://www.fs.usda.gov/detail/olympi...telprdb5353847

Do you think beginning of october is too late to do this ride?

Bon Jon Pass is about 4,000 feet, if snow hasn't started showing up at the pass levels and the weather forecast was good i think you'd be fine, it's about 120 miles R/T out of seattle, and maybe 20 percent gravel.

Dungeness Forks CG, Rd 28 past Mount Zion TH, RD 27.

this....

turns into this...

at about 4,000 feet for almost the entire descent to sea level.

I try to do a weekend trip once a year. Here is my latest:

https://www.bikeforums.net/showthread...ngle-track-etc

Did 2 last year, a simple out and back overnight to a lean to and a through ride of the ADKs.

Mix it up too. The road rig has gotten the call previous to me getting the Fargo and getting creative with terrain.

I also live in Houston and have been looking for nice weekend trips in the area. Have you done this route before? How is it? Do you have a map of the route?

Did anyone here have a link to the bikeovernight.org site?

Some great stories there including an article for newbies... although it could probably be fleshed out a little.

I also get a kick out of the gear lists. There are a few pictures of total gear at the bottom of the page. Hard to compare it to mine since they have everything so neatly packed in stuff sacks. (The only thing I will say is that I do have things a bit more scattered, but I keep a list of essentials and note exactly where they should be stored... I once arrived at the a campsite and thought I had left my tent stakes at home [old-fashioned hoop tent ],,, after some panic I found them in a different bag)

The header picture on the bikeovernights page has 2 cyclists - 1 fully loaded with 4 panniers, and another pulling a trailer....

Really, people carry that much stuff for an overnight?

Hmmm... I had a look through the Touring Rigs thread here earlier and wondered the same thing.

Not that there is anything wrong with that, but I try to tour with the same stuff for an overnight camping trip in temperate climates (ie, with weather than could bring four seasons in a day) as I do for an extended tour.

Yeah... there are some gear lists that mention "the kitchen sink".

You could probably write this off as a beginner's mistake. I know my last trip I gear was about 28 pounds, while my first trip several years ago was closer to 40. A good example is that I've reduced tent weight from 8 to 4 pounds. There are many things I could do to drop it another 5-10 pounds... but I find weight under 30 lbs is manageable.

But a more minor tweak for me is to not take a small bottle of wine. I've replaced it with a couple of teabags. Weight difference is enormous and I've discovered that I don't really need wine while camping... tea seems to be enough.

Here's another good resource.

I doubt I would be surprised. I see commuters every day that carry a lot more than I carried for the Southern Tier. Length of trip doesn't really factor in that much wrt how much folks carry.
