I also tend to plan more day-to-day stuff, using Warm Showers and making reservations at campgrounds. I'm a planning kind o' guy, and more comfortable when I have a known plan ahead of me. So re-planning a day or two isn't as big a deal as re-planning an entire week would be.

I would see carrying a spare tire on a shorter tour as paranoia. Particularly when I'm running schwalbe marathons. But I'm on a longer tour, there's more at stake if things get scuttled, and I think I'll be happier knowing I have that spare folding tire packed away.
Thanks for the response. It makes perfect sense. It doesn't make me want to carry a spare, but it does answer my question and satisfy my curiosity. Everyone has a different touring style, I typically don't know where I will stop for the day until I am there. Since there is no real schedule, a blown schedule is a non issue for me. I'd look at hitching a ride as part of the touring experience.

I don't think I'd differentiate what I carried if I were to do a shorter tour. I figure the list I use is fine regardless of trip length. I really have no interest in trips of less than 10 days or so, but I think I'd carry pretty much the same stuff even if I went overnight.

Obviously that is just the way I tour and it is certainly just one of many possible approaches.
