Jandd Pannier Problems
 

I has a pair of the Jandd large mountain panniers with a Blackburn XR-1 rack. The problem I have run into is that the panneir has gotten caught in the wheel twice now, once on each side. It seems there is not enough support for the bottom corner farthest back. It can move around a bit. When I'm stopped and just push on it there is ~3in from the pannier and the wheel so I'm not completely sure how it is able to move so far in to get stuck in the wheel.

Both times it has happened it tore a 3in hole in the pannier so I would really like to keep it from happening.

Was thinking of getting a rack that had a little better support farther back like Blackburn TRX-1 or EX-2. Maybe the Axiom Streamliner DLX. Would consider a surly rack but they are a bit pricey.

Definitely get a rack with support further back. Might also look at the Tortek Expedition rack. It has to be ordered from overseas, but it is nice for a good price. Also has a 35 kgs weight limit, so it is well made. I have had the Tortek on on a couple bikes for a few years now and like it much better than Blackburn racks.

Yes, I've found that rear bottom corner to be vulnerable on a number of different panniers and now use a rack on my touring bike that has a dogleg support strut at the back so it guards against that part of the pannier swinging in against the spokes.

This is more of a rack problem than a pannier problem.

ya, one of my old pair of Ortliebs from the early 90s had this happen once and warped the plastic rigid stuff a bit, meaning that it would happen again if I didnt have much stuff in the bag. Partially full it was fine, but I never used it solo anymore. I should have gotten a diff rack but never did.

there are reasonably priced racks such as this with the "dogleg" thingee as suggested, so you dont have to spend over a 100 bucks for me.

If you are not really looking to buy a new rack, you can tie wrap a rod or medal strap across the rack supports that extends far enough back to keep the pannier from the wheel.

Depending on what the rack is made out of, you might be able to have someone weld/braze an extension on to keep the pannier out of the wheel. I haven't had that problem recently, but all of my current racks have the extra support area on them.
