New (to me) frameset - Koga content

6 Attachment(s)
I posted this in the C&V forum, but thought I would share here as well. I have a couple of nice touring rigs, but have been looking for one of these for several years. I just purchased a 1993 Koga Miyata Terraliner a couple months ago that is just a tad too big - because it was the first time I found something close to what I have been looking for. Then on Wed., this showed up on the local CL, and low and behold I was able to pick it up today. I will be building this up over the next couple of months along with another winter bike project I have going and am super happy to have acquired this frame set. Internal routing for cables and gen./dynamo wiring, the works. Will update when it is done being built up.

That frame has the ugliest colours I've ever seen.... I love it! Keep us informed!

fietsbob 11-24-12 11:55 AM

As good as any Frame in the world, already been around the globe , just to get to where you are .
TW to NL To US PNW is 3/4, at least..

acidfast7 11-24-12 02:51 PM

that is a proper touring frame.

I am thinking I will go with older Shimano XT 7 or 8 speed throughout, except for the brakes. I have some XTR 900 cantilever brakes I will use. Not sure what rims and crank I will go with yet, but I will probably go half-step + granny. Does this sound about right for a good build? Also, though the frame looks as if it is small, it is actually 57 cm.

Will take a bit of time to get done as I don't just have the money to throw at it right this minute. Will be thinning the herd a bit, selling a few parts, etc. to help with financing the build.

sounds good the shimano XT is fantastic good set of hoops on that beauty and you'll be flying.

Ciufalon, Great bike and your build plan seems sound. I prefer the 8S rear and have spare cassettes and etc. so that's how I built my tourer, but there's nothing bad about a 7S. That frameset has my favorite bottle cages and CLR will help bring back the button's luster.

8 speed 12-34, triple a 48,36,24 (if 3rd, a 74bcd) triple would be the way I'd go.

K cassette was a Great set, but, 7 speed cassettes were last century, 8 speed is still going on new bikes.

though I used a Phil Wood Freewhweel hub and 7 speed freewheel
and it worked fine.. Friction/ratchet Bar ends.
a reliable success.

Thanks for the input guys. I think 8 sp. sounds like the way to go. I have some parts on hand that I am thinking I could use to just to get the bike rolling sooner, such as, a set of Deerhead derailleurs (off a Raleigh Portage), or a set of light action derailleurs (off a Miyata Six Fifteen GT). Both sets work great, and I think I have a couple touring crank sets as well. Just need to check the parts bin. Since I have the brakes, I am thinking I should just put these parts on to start with and then upgrade as I can. Does that seem reasonable? Do you think those derailleurs would wrap enough chain for 8 sp.? I'm pretty sure the bikes they came off were both 6 speed freewheels.

Do you think those derailleurs would pull enough cable for 8 sp.?
They will go between stroke limit screws as far as the cable pulls it ..
its the not being pulled far enough, by the lever ../ that IDK.

You can always Jtech shiftmate, and have those 2 pulley diameters greatly different to amplify cable pull .

Ciufalon 11-25-12 04:58 PM

Thanks fietsbob, I will give it a go and see if either of the derailleurs I have wraps enough chain or have the throw between the limits for 8 sp. with a 34 large cog. I definitely plan to upgrade to the XT stuff, but just thought this would be a good way to get it put together and rolling sooner. Plus I am pretty sure the deerhead derailleurs were good derailleurs on par with XT. If anyone can confirm this and they work well, then who knows. The light action derailleurs, while not all that respected, worked beautifully on the Six Fifteen that came with them. Since it would likely be a temporary set-up, not sure I want to get into buying extra stuff like a shiftmate to make it work.

Got it put together

Well, I got this Koga frame and fork built up over the last couple days with parts I had on hand plus some from a donor bike. It is a 57 cm bike and will undergo some changes over time. Plan to switch out the stem for an adjustable one with a face plate (may need to use stem adapter), still have to mount the Nitto big front rack I have, the front mud plan is off at the moment - until I replace the toe clips with metal ones to allow room for the flap without toe strike. Third bottle cage will only be used for touring. It is currently set up with a 7 speed cassette, but I plan to change it all over to 8 sp. sometime in the next few months. So far, due to circumstances, moving bikes and parts around, etc., this is a very inexpensive bike; into it about $350 so far as it sits, including the XTR m900 canti brakes but not including the Nitto front rack that will go on it (which I also got for half price). Depending on what the donor bike frame set sells for, the costs could go down. Final cost will be under $450 for what I think is nice touring bike that I never could have afforded to buy new.

What brand is the rear rack?

Ciufalon 04-11-13 07:28 PM

It is a Tortec expedition rack. You can order them online from overseas. Fairly inexpensive/great value, 35 kgs capacity.

bradtx 04-11-13 08:52 PM

Ciufalon, Gotta love a parts bin build. :) I wouldn't worry about an 8S unless there's something the 7S doesn't work for you.

Brad

Ciufalon 04-11-13 11:11 PM

Thanks Brad. Some of the parts came off another bike I have been riding for a few years that was just a bit small for me. It was such a great bike I was waiting for something as nice in my size. So you are probably right, the other bike worked beautifully with the 7 sp. and I never had any problems. I may just replace the cassette to one that will be better with this crankset. My other road touring bike has 18 speeds! It's even advertised on the chain stay. Six sprockets on the rear! No old fashioned ten speed for me. Now I've gotta start clearing out parts bin stuff I won't be using any time soon.
